Square Enix continues to fuel the player base’s curiosity about the next big chapter of Final Fantasy 14, called “Evercold”. The climate of anxiety grows not only due to the mechanical changes planned for the MMORPG, but also due to the avatar creation system, which promises to deliver the highest level of detail ever seen in the franchise, keeping the public warmed up until the closing event of the Fanfest in the city of Tokyo, scheduled for October.
During the Fanfest edition held in Berlin, a specific topic ended up being overshadowed by the main announcements. Players who monitor every detail about “Evercold” and followed the two central presentations noticed that speculation surrounding the introduction of a combatant focused on ranged physical damage gained strength behind the scenes.
This new combat function emerges as the main attraction for the conference in Japan, sharing the attention with the official announcement of the expansion’s sales calendar. The expectation surrounding this addition is reaching extremely high levels, driven by the decision of director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) and his team to abandon the series’ traditional archetypes, although current theories may hide surprises.
Mysterious appearance of Visna shares the spotlight with the Bastion tank in Germany
Those who followed the European ceremony, whether in person or via broadcasts, saw the first half of the panel focus on Bastion, the unprecedented defender that will debut at the beginning of next year. This job took on the role of protagonist with a unique visual design, positioning itself alongside the Paladin as a primary option for absorbing damage. The community will certainly test the new feature during the “Evercold” narrative campaign, ensuring that the class receives due practical evaluation.
Even with Bastion’s imposing demonstration in the extended promotional video, viewers focused their attention on an earlier moment that remains without official responses. On top of a flying vessel, a young woman of the Miqo’te race, identified by Yoshi-P as Visna, appears holding a shiny piece of equipment that mixes characteristics of a tool and weaponry.
The camera highlights the luminous object before opening the frame to reveal an armored falcon-like bird interacting with the girl. Then, the character involuntarily fires aquatic magic, projecting an emblem that resembles the silhouette of a bird in flight. Discussions on the forums about the meaning of this icon generated dozens of theories, most without a definitive conclusion, requiring deeper analysis.
The section focused on the feline girl works as a strong indication for the arrival of the long-awaited cause of physical damage from a distance, a vision shared by much of the online community. Players’ bets are divided into some classic nomenclatures discussed on the forums:
- Falconer, focused on direct control of the bird of prey in combat.
- Hunter, using traps and stealth attacks from a distance.
- Ranger, with an emphasis on survival and target tracking.
This debate gained momentum especially after music director Masayoshi Soken provided additional clues at a technical panel. There is, however, a chance that the producer is using this cinematic sequence just to mislead fans.
The emphasis given to equipment may be a deliberate strategy to hide the class’s true identity. The luminous artifact and the aquatic magic used to ward off the bird may simply represent the character’s role as a crew member on the Naglfar aircraft. The producer avoided delving into the narrative details, limiting himself to confirming that she will play a fundamental role in the plot, abruptly ending any further explanation about the scene.
The winged animal, however, remains at the center of debates, as its inclusion in the video has a clear purpose. The animation ends with the falcon quickly leaving the frame, suggesting that it flies towards its true master, who would be the official representative of the new class. The game’s history shows that job revelations are usually made by the Warrior of Light or by members of the Scions, as occurred when Krile took on the role of Pictomancer and the protagonist wielded Viper’s blades in Dawntrail, a pattern that could be maintained or completely subverted in October.
Audio panel provides sound cues on how the new combat mechanics work
If the promotional video opened up space for imagination, the presentation focused on sound design delivered much more concrete elements. During the afternoon of the event, Masayoshi Soken led a dynamic that practically validated suspicions that a master of birds of prey will be the next addition to “Evercold’s” arsenal.
Alongside audio designer Go Kinuya, the composer organized a guessing game with participants in the auditorium. The game consisted of playing small sound fragments taken from the game environment, challenging the audience to identify the origin of each noise.
The interaction seemed unpretentious until the final moments of the session. The first mysterious audio featured the characteristic sound of a magical invocation, something common in the franchise’s universe, which has dozens of different spells, but the following sound effect completely changed the tone of the presentation.
Recordings shared on platforms such as Reddit show that the second file reproduced the clear cry of a bird, immediately accompanied by the impact of a physical blow. The auditorium fell into a confused silence, trying to assimilate the information, until Kinuya jokingly declared that his colleague had leaked the effects of the new ranged damage class ahead of time.
The performance culminated with Soken being taken off the stage by fake security guards, showing a smile on his face. The situation made it clear that the development team planned this delivery of information so that the community could connect the trailer video with the panel sounds. This interactive approach replaces Naoki Yoshida’s traditional tactic of using t-shirts with enigmatic prints, a method that was used in the Anaheim edition but discarded in Europe.
It remains to be seen whether the developers expected players to decipher the riddle so quickly. The current scenario indicates that the user base has already understood the proposal, repeating the level of precision seen during the discovery of the tank in California.
Feasibility of a Beast Master in Square Enix’s Current MMORPG Ecosystem
The confirmation of a Falconer raises debates about how this mechanic would fit into the current balance of fights. The situation takes on an ironic tone when we remember that the game will receive the Beastmaster in September, during the patch 7.56 cycle, operating under the limited class format.
Implementing a mascot-focused combatant would not face significant technical barriers. The model would work with the summoned animal taking a considerable part of the damage, while the main character complements the attacks with his own weaponry. This dual system would bring freshness to the ranged attacker category, requiring simultaneous positioning management, something that will only be detailed in the Asian presentation.
Regarding the character’s equipment, the forums suggest the use of a mechanical whip or a wand, which would explain the conjuring sound heard at the event. As the function belongs to the physical damage group, the use of pure magic is ruled out, reinforcing the thesis that the object held by the feline girl in the promotional video only serves to confuse theorists.
A bird controller would fill an important mechanical gap within the title. Although games in the genre have explored controllable companions for decades, Final Fantasy 14 has lacked a true pet master since the launch of the Endwalker expansion in 2021, when the Summoner underwent a drastic rework, going from managing creatures on the field to becoming a wizard focused on burst-damage phases. The new work would take over this empty space definitively.
Possibility of a complete twist in the final expansion announcement
Considering the volume of evidence accumulated since the European convention, the chances of the producer announcing something completely different are minimal. However, in the world of video games, no theory can be treated as a fait accompli until the official logo appears on the big screen in Japan.
An alternative scenario would involve revealing a profession that did not even appear in the promotional materials. This route, however, would make playing with the audio files completely meaningless, going against the detailed strategic planning that characterizes the project management under Yoshida’s command.
This consolidation of tracks practically buries the old theories that we would receive a traditional Corsair. The idea made sense, considering the strong presence of sky pirates and aircraft in the franchise’s mythology, but there is a small margin for the design team to merge the two concepts.
The creation of an air pirate equipped with a crossbow and accompanied by a bird of prey would perfectly unite two classic aesthetics. The promise of abandoning old professions does not prevent Square Enix from rescuing isolated elements from past titles, such as Ranger from Final Fantasy 5, and adapting them to the dynamic reality of modern MMORPG, delivering an unprecedented experience to subscribers.
