Helmet threat: poisonous cottonmouth snake appears on player equipment in Maumelle

A Maumelle High School football player had an unexpected scare on August 6, 2026, during a practice in the city of Maumelle, Arkansas. A venomous snake was found hiding inside his helmet, creating a rare and dangerous incident. The animal was lodged between the equipment’s pads, which made it difficult for control agents to remove.

Unusual discovery and action by authorities

Maumelle Animal Services was called to the school following the incident, which initially reported the presence of a possible copperhead snake. Officers inspected the helmet and confirmed the existence of the snake. However, after a more detailed analysis, they verified that it was not a copperhead, but a water snake, possibly of the cottonmouth species, known for its toxicity.

Species identification and challenge in removal

The rescue team later identified the animal as a cottonmouth snake, also known as a water moccasin. Chris Davis, director of Maumelle Animal Services, commented that, despite having rescued snakes from unusual places such as cars, engines and backpacks, he had never come across one inside an American football helmet. Difficulty accessing the equipment’s padding required officers to use unconventional methods, such as flooding the helmet, to safely dislodge and capture the reptile.

Danger of the sting and happy outcome

Cottonmouth snakes are venomous species that often seek shelter in dark, protected spaces. Davis classified the cottonmouth as the second most dangerous snake in Arkansas, behind only the rattlesnake, and emphasized that the situation could have been very serious if the player had been bitten. Fortunately, the athlete was not injured and the snake was relocated to a safe environment. The episode drew attention due to its rarity and positive outcome.
