British communications regulator Ofcom has confirmed that Radio Caroline breached broadcasting standards by erroneously broadcasting an obituary of King Charles III, an incident that raises questions about the security of communications protocols in news stories of great public sensitivity.
The episode took place on May 19, during technical activities in the studio. An employee, driven by curiosity, accessed previously edited files to be released in the event of the monarch’s death and then left the place in a state of panic.

The news of the king’s death was broadcast three times, followed by the playing of the national anthem. Just thirty minutes later, a retraction and apology were released by the broadcaster. Ofcom considered this a serious breach of journalistic accuracy requirements, and Rádio Caroline reported that the employee involved was warned, and the pre-recorded obituaries were removed from quick access.
