German manufacturer Audi confirmed a major expansion in its vehicle line with the worldwide unveiling of the unprecedented Q9 and SQ9 utility vehicles, designed for the 2027 line. Officially presented at the end of July 2026, the utilities mark the company’s definitive foray into the competitive niche of giant SUVs, placing the brand on a direct collision course with the renowned BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. With this duo, the automaker seeks to redefine its own limits of on-board technology and automotive refinement.

Strong demand from American dealers shaped the automaker’s design

The development of these vehicles of unprecedented proportions was born from a latent commercial need to offer more spacious options to consumers. Gernot Döllner, the company’s chief executive, explained that the desires of US drivers guided every step of the cars’ engineering. According to the CEO, the creation of a giant utility vehicle was the most incisive demand made by North American dealers in recent years. As a result, the Americas must purchase around 66% of all units manufactured at the Bratislava unit, in Slovakia, an industrial complex that already has a tradition of assembling robust Volkswagen Group models, such as the Porsche Cayenne.

Superlative dimensions and intelligent headlights that project images onto the asphalt

The physical size of the Q9 is impressive at first glance, measuring an impressive 5.31 meters from tip to tip, which represents around 25 centimeters more than the well-known Q7. The distance between the axles has also grown significantly, reaching 3.14 meters, while the height has gained an extra 7 centimeters, ensuring a dominant stance in traffic. To balance this colossal size, chief designer Gary Telaak opted for a body with clean, fluid surfaces, abandoning the aggressive creases of the company’s other cars to convey a visual sensation of grandeur and elegance.

In terms of lighting, German engineering applied the most modern in road safety. The Matrix LED front optical assembly can turn off specific diodes so as not to blind those coming from the opposite direction, a feature that is now approved for use on American highways. At the rear, the OLED headlights adopt an unprecedented curved shape and function as communication panels, capable of drawing a light warning triangle in situations of sudden braking. Furthermore, the directional arrows gained the ability to project light indications directly onto the ground.

Mechanical set delivers up to 591 horsepower in sports versions

Under the hood, the strategy for North America focuses exclusively on burning gasoline, leaving diesel engines restricted to the European continent. The standard configuration of the Q9 hides a turbocharged 2.9 V6 engine, inherited from the most recent generation of the Q7, which delivers 429 horsepower and works in conjunction with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Equipped with traditional Quattro all-wheel drive, the family utility vehicle needs just 4.9 seconds to reach 96 km/h and can tow loads of up to 3,492 kilos with ease.

For drivers looking for adrenaline, the SQ9 variant raises the bar with a brutal 4.0 V8 twin-turbo engine, capable of generating 591 horsepower, numbers identical to those of the smaller SQ7 brother. This high-performance version maintains the eight-speed transmission, but adjusts four-wheel drive to prioritize the rear axle, adding electronic differential lock and torque vectoring to improve cornering. With this package, the giant accelerates from zero to 96 km/h in a blistering 3.8 seconds, wearing asymmetrically sized tires on wheels that can reach 23 inches, all accompanied by the sound of a sports exhaust and an exclusive honeycomb-shaped front grille.

Technological cabin offers massage, high definition screens and immersive sound

The cabin was designed to simulate a first-class living room, allowing it to accommodate seven occupants in a traditional layout or six passengers in more luxurious individual seats. All positions have factory power adjustments, and families can find secure child seat anchors in both the second and third rows. Those traveling in the front enjoy sports seats with heating as standard, and can add ventilation and even a body massage system in the more expensive versions, as well as amenities such as electric door closing and climate-controlled armrests.

The acoustic experience is handled by a powerful 1,360-watt Bang & Olufsen system, which distributes sound across 22 speakers, including emitters in the headrests and vibrators in the front seats. The digital environment is dominated by an ecosystem of cutting-edge displays, divided as follows:

  • Driver-focused 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster.
  • 14.5-inch main multimedia center in the center of the panel.
  • Dedicated 12.3-inch monitor exclusively for the front passenger.

This entire technological apparatus runs on an operating system based on Android, allowing the installation of a variety of applications and native integration with the Amazon Alexa virtual assistant.

Values and expected arrival of vehicles in North American stores

The commercial schedule establishes that North America will be the first region to receive the new product, with the first units arriving on storefronts in the United States in the last months of 2026. The price list reflects the high-end positioning: the entry-level Q9 will start at US$89,095, rising to US$94,695 in the Premium Plus package and reaching US$103,795 in the Prestige configuration. In turn, the sporty SQ9 will be sold in a single and complete package for US$119,395, definitively taking over as the most expensive and luxurious vehicle in the German manufacturer’s catalog.
