Epic Games announced the sale of digital art platforms ArtStation and Sketchfab to the company KitBash3D on August 10. The news generated great excitement among the artist community, many of whom expressed relief as they believed the change could spell an end to the prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content on platforms.

Artists celebrate new direction of ArtStation and Sketchfab

Following the announcement of the acquisition, a significant portion of ArtStation users expressed optimism. The expectation is that, under KitBash3D, the platform will return to its “former glory”, moving away from what they describe as a “flood of ineffective AI” that they say undermined the work of human creators and misled potential customers. Complaints about the proliferation of AI-generated art have been ongoing since Epic Games’ initial purchase in 2021.

Details of the acquisition and the role of KitBash3D

KitBash3D, recognized for its asset libraries for 3D creation, acquired Epic Games’ art and modeling platforms for an undisclosed amount. In separate statements, Epic Games, ArtStation and KitBash3D confirmed the transaction. While Epic Games highlighted its continued focus on developing Unreal Engine 6, Fortnite and its digital storefront, ArtStation focused on reassuring its community of over 10 million users. The company has assured that there will be no immediate changes to access or use of the tools, and that portfolios, libraries and workflows will remain unchanged.

Community reactions and ArtStation positioning

The sale had a strong impact on forums and social networks, such as the r/ArtStation subreddit, where artists shared their perspectives:

  • Epic Freedom:One user expressed hope that the platform will be “free from Epic and their passion for crappy AI.”
  • Criticisms of the previous management:Another artist said he was “very happy that two of my favorite sites on the internet are no longer under their control”, demonstrating dissatisfaction with Epic’s previous management.

In response to user feedback, ArtStation posted an additional message on X (formerly Twitter), stating that it is “hopeful about what this next chapter could mean” and that it is “listening” to the community. The company recognized the need for “trust to be earned” and the “important work ahead.”

Epic Games’ history with creation platforms

Epic Games had acquired ArtStation and Sketchfab in 2021 with the aim of strengthening its development ecosystem and 3D capabilities. However, since then, many artists on the platforms have expressed discontent with the growing presence of AI-generated content. This dissatisfaction was manifested in the difficulty of differentiating human work from AI productions, in addition to concerns about authenticity and the appreciation of creative effort.

Future expectations for the digital art market

The transition of ArtStation and Sketchfab to KitBash3D not only ends a controversial phase under Epic Games, but also opens the door to a new dialogue about the role of AI in art platforms. The acquisition suggests a possible reorientation towards content more aligned with the expectations of traditional artists, who seek an environment where originality and human work are priorities. ArtStation’s response to user feedback indicates an intention to rebuild trust and adapt the platform to the needs of its creator base.
