Instagram announced on July 10 a new Artificial Intelligence system that will give users greater autonomy over the Reels section algorithm. This update allows audiences to determine which short videos will appear in their feed on the platform.
The innovative functionality will allow individuals to view and modify algorithm settings, ensuring more control and transparency over the type of content displayed. Access to the tool will be via the top right corner of the Reels screen, presenting the themes that the platform identifies as relevant to the user, based on their browsing and search history.

Users will have the freedom to select and organize categories of interest, ensuring that related content is shown. This customization covers both publications from followed profiles and open accounts suggested by Instagram itself.
An additional benefit is the possibility, within the same settings menu, for the user to create and share posts linked to these algorithm themes. These publications will be directed to other profiles that have similar interests, expanding the reach of the content.
The new feature is already active in the United States, where it was initially implemented. Meta, the company responsible for Instagram, reported that expansion to other global markets will take place in the coming weeks.
Instagram launches unprecedented algorithm control feature
This is the first time that Instagram has offered a control mechanism over the display and sharing of content directly linked to its algorithm. The expectation is that this will be a line of development for future Meta updates.
The move is part of a broader global initiative to promote improved content control, involving both users and the platforms themselves. This movement also seeks to prevent digital crimes, such as the recent ban on the use of social networks by children under 16 in Australia.
