After the gameplay presentation of Marvel’s Wolverine at State of Play in June, the automatic regeneration of the character Logan’s costume generated intense discussions among fans. Insomniac Games, developer of the highly anticipated title, clarified the reasons behind this decision on August 13, 2026, seeking a fundamental balance between the realism of combat and the gaming experience for players.

Understand fans’ reaction to the costume’s regeneration

The controversy over Wolverine’s clothing healing along with his body mobilized the online community. Many players expressed surprise and even irony. Comments like “Wow, even his clothes have a healing factor!” or “NANOMACHINES, MY GUY!” spread quickly across networks. Some fans even tried to create internal explanations for the game’s universe, even mentioning the possible intervention of Reed Richards.

Insomniac details the decision behind the feature

Instead of a complex justification based on comic book mythology, Insomniac revealed that the choice was guided mainly by the practicality of the gameplay. Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology at Insomniac, and Jess Reiner-Reed, senior project director, addressed the topic in a conversation.

Fitzgerald explained that practical issues were crucial in the decision. “You can’t play most of the game with just rags on your body,” he said. The goal was to find the sweet spot between showcasing the visual effects of brutal combat and allowing the suit to regenerate at specific moments, while maintaining Wolverine’s signature cinematic atmosphere.

Search for balance between visual damage and feeling of power

Jess Reiner-Reed reinforced the importance of this balance for player immersion. She said that, in the early stages of development, the character’s clothes were torn for very long periods. This characteristic ended up reducing the player’s perception of power, which went against the essence of controlling a character like Wolverine.

The team realized that the experience needed to convey the mutant’s strength and resilience. Therefore, it was essential to adjust the system so that the suit reflected damage but also recovered, ensuring that the player continued to feel powerful during intense missions and confrontations.

Why Permanent Armor Damage Wouldn’t Work for Wolverine

Many fans expressed the desire for the damage to the armor to be permanent or to worsen over time. However, it is essential to consider Wolverine’s nature. He is a character who takes a massive amount of damage as a central part of his combat style. If the clothing damage were persistent, Logan would be completely naked within a few minutes of action, which would compromise the seriousness and flow of the game.

Visual damage system and the game’s fluid technology

Even with suit regeneration, Insomniac put considerable effort into creating a detailed damage system for each armor present in the game. This system allows damage to be reflected in different ways, enriching the visual experience of combat.

Fitzgerald explained the investment in how damage is displayed on the character, his costume, and even enemies. He highlighted, for example, the “really interesting fluid technology” used for the blood spatter. These are not mere pre-rendered effects, but particles that interact with the environment, hitting the ground and leaving marks. If Wolverine walks in water, the blood is washed away, creating realistic swirls on the surface.
