Neighbors rescue 4-year-old child after fall from 5th floor in Poland
A 4-year-old girl survived a fall from the fifth-floor balcony of a building in Łomża, Poland, on August 14, 2026, thanks to the quick action of three neighbors. They spread a blanket to cushion the impact and save the child.
The child remained hanging from the balcony railing for approximately 15 minutes before falling from a height of approximately 15 meters.
While the men were preparing on the ground floor, other residents tried, unsuccessfully, to wake up the girl’s mother, who was sleeping under the influence of alcohol in the apartment. The child was rescued conscious and taken to the hospital, where he received medical treatment for minor injuries.
The neighbors’ agility ensured the child’s rescue
The sequence of the incident was captured by the building’s security cameras. The images show the girl, wearing only a shirt, clinging to the balcony railing, moving from side to side. All around, residents noticed the imminent danger and rushed to help.

Dariusz Płoński, one of the men involved in the rescue, said he heard screams as soon as he left the building. “I looked up and saw the child moving from one side of the fence to the other,” he reported.
The three men positioned a blanket directly beneath the porch in an attempt to lessen the force of the impact. Despite her efforts, the girl slipped and hit the ground, but the blanket was essential to reduce the violence of the 15 meter fall.

A doctor who lived at the scene immediately went down to provide first aid, and a team of firefighters arrived shortly afterwards to support the incident.

Consequences for the mother after the incident
During the rescue, the girl’s mother remained sleeping in the fifth floor apartment. Neighbors repeatedly tried to alert her by knocking on the door, but the woman did not wake up.
After the incident, she underwent a blood alcohol test, which indicated a concentration of 70 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. This value is equivalent to 0.35 mg/l on the breathalyzer, a level that is above the limit allowed for drivers in Poland.
According to a Polish police spokeswoman, the woman could be prosecuted for exposing the child to risk of death or serious injury. Polish legislation provides that such a crime can result in a sentence of up to five years in prison.
