Uli Hoeness, honorary president of Bayern Munich, expressed concern about the excessive enthusiasm regarding Jürgen Klopp, recently appointed coach of the Germany national team, in statements made on August 20, 2026. In an interview with RTL Sky, he recognized the value of the coach, but expressed reservations about the “veneration” that surrounds him.
Hoeness argues that Klopp’s established reputation over the years could create unrealistic expectations before he even begins his activities. The Bavarian leader, although he admits the coach’s competence, emphasized that the necessary transformations in the national team will not be immediate.
“I consider Jürgen Klopp a very good coach. However, I’m not a big fan of this veneration. He already has a status as if he were able to walk on water. Furthermore, he won’t be able to change everything with a simple touch of magic. He will dedicate himself hard and many things will improve, but you need to give it time and, above all, you shouldn’t believe that he is the Messiah”, said Hoeness.
Hoeness’ central criticism, however, goes beyond the expectations surrounding Klopp. The former Bayern president raised doubts about the inclusion of Marc Kosicke, Klopp’s long-time advisor, in the new formation of the German national team. Kosicke, who has worked with the coach for approximately two decades, was brought on board to work in areas such as strategy, development and innovation, as well as administrative issues such as communication and sponsorships.
Hoeness called Kosicke’s signing problematic, especially given the fact that he is also the director of a player agency. This situation, according to the manager, suggests that Klopp and his associates may have acquired disproportionate power within the German Federation.
“What bothers me about this situation is that advisor Kosicke has been integrated into the team. I’m not sure what his role will be. He runs a player agency and is its executive director. I consider that a problem. This whole narrative sounds like a ‘friendly takeover’ to me. Klopp and his collaborators took over the DFB, and I see that as a mistake,” said Hoeness.
On the other hand, Bernd Neuendorf, president of the Federation, clarified that Kosicke will act as an external collaborator and will serve as a crucial link between Klopp and the organizational structure. He emphasized that the strong connection between the two was a determining factor in the hiring taking place together.
Hoeness also mentioned Hans-Joachim Watzke, vice-president of the Federation and emblematic figure at Borussia Dortmund, where Klopp consolidated much of his career in Germany. The Bayern representative confirmed that he maintains a good relationship with Watzke, but pointed out that the vice-president was involved in Klopp’s arrival to the national team, and this participation requires monitoring.
“There is no doubt that Aki Watzke, with whom I now have an excellent relationship, had a hand in this. I believe we need to analyze this issue further. However, in the end, the best talents will play for Germany, and they are under our command”, concluded Hoeness.
