The level of surveillance surrounding the most anticipated entertainment project of the decade has reached a new level. Responsible for managing the Grand Theft Auto franchise, publisher Take-Two Interactive decided to tighten legal measures to stop the dissemination of unauthorized materials from the next chapter in the series. The legal movement, which gained substantial strength from the second half of August 2026, aims to stifle the distribution of clips and images that show mechanics still in development.

This aggressive stance represents a significant escalation in the company’s intellectual property protection strategy. Months earlier, the corporation’s lawyers had already notified platforms aimed at gamers and corporate audiences, such as Discord and Microsoft’s infrastructure, seeking to take down download links. Now, the legal department has redirected its heavy artillery to the two largest content distribution hubs on the internet: the microblogging social network X and the video portal YouTube.

The urgency to stem the flow of confidential information reflects the corporate trauma generated by the mega-leak that occurred in 2022, when dozens of videos of the prototype flooded the internet. To avoid a similar impact on the official marketing cycle, developer Rockstar Games and its parent company have adopted a zero-tolerance policy, using Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) subpoenas to compel tech giants to immediately cooperate with investigations.

New legal offensive targets mass sharing on social media

The current focus of information security teams is on a recent batch of five clandestine publications that revealed unprecedented details of the map and vehicles. Among the files that motivated the new round of processes, highlights include scenes of aerial navigation in a large plane and the demonstration of a hyper sports car traveling along night highways. These specific fragments spread quickly, forcing an immediate response in the courts.

To ensure the effectiveness of the removals, the publisher’s legal representatives filed formal petitions in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. The choice of this jurisdiction is not accidental, as the court has a history of agility in issuing court orders against copyright infringements in the digital environment, obliging service providers to hand over confidential data under penalty of complicity.

Closed siege against profiles on the old Twitter requires breach of data confidentiality

Within the platform X ecosystem, the investigation turned its spotlight on a restricted group of users who acted as primary disseminators of the stolen clips. The accounts identified in court documents operated under the usernames @cyberleek_ar_io, @cyberleekario and @MrCyberLeek. The game company’s tactics go far beyond simply banning these pages, seeking to discover the true identity of the individuals who operate the keyboards.

The subpoena issued requires the social network to provide a complete dossier on the activity of these profiles, retroactive to the first day of June 2026. The list of telematic information requested by American justice is extensive and designed to eliminate any layer of anonymity:

  • Original email addresses used when creating profiles.
  • Detailed IP address records to map the geographic location of accesses.
  • Cell phone numbers linked to account authentication systems.
  • Unique hardware identifiers, revealing which smartphone or computer models were used.
  • History of connections with third-party applications and other integrated social networks.

The legal pressure had an immediate effect on the social network’s infrastructure, resulting in the summary suspension of all profiles listed in the petition. Interestingly, the datamining community reacted to the offensive: a subsequent video that circulated on obscure forums had an embedded message stating that the original person responsible for the files no longer had an active presence on the site, suggesting that the accounts taken down could be imitators seeking engagement.

Even faced with the possibility that they are processing secondary profiles, the corporation’s lawyers maintain a hard line. The argument presented to the judge establishes that any individual who hosts or redistributes protected material, regardless of whether they are the original hacker or just a replicator, is subject to the same financial and criminal penalties provided for in federal copyright legislation.

Unusual connection with cryptocurrencies marks video removals on YouTube

Parallel to the microblogging battle, Google’s video arm also became the scene of a technical and legal clash. The petition directed at YouTube focuses on the eradication of a specific file, cataloged internally by investigators as “UNAUTH_2026AUG_VIDEO2”. The upload of this material was traced to channels operating under the names Surfer24k, CyberLeeks and similar variations.

The element that most caught the attention of cybersecurity analysts was not the content of the game itself, but a modification made to the images. Screenshots attached to the lawsuit show that the video contained a watermark promoting the purchase of a digital asset on the Solana network. This tactic reveals an evolution in the behavior of offenders, who are now trying to capitalize on the huge audience generated by stolen materials to artificially inflate the value of memecoins and apply financial scams to unsuspecting fans.

This intersection between software piracy and crypto scams adds a layer of urgency to takedowns. By demanding that YouTube delete the records and hand over the data of the creators of these channels, the franchise holder not only protects its product, but also dismantles an illicit monetization operation that takes advantage of the developer’s brand to attract inexperienced investors.

Identification strategy precedes possible criminal and civil proceedings

From a procedural point of view, the actions underway in New York constitute a preparatory phase known as “discovery”. At this time, there is no judgment on the merits of the guilt of those involved, nor requests for financial compensation stipulated. The mechanism used serves exclusively to force technology platforms to break the confidentiality of their users, providing the real names and physical addresses necessary to formulate a formal accusation.

The documents filed make the future intention of the corporation clear. The lawyers attested under oath that the data obtained through the subpoenas will be used strictly in the defense of intellectual property rights. This means that as soon as ISPs hand over IP and email reports, unmasked individuals will face devastating civil lawsuits demanding multi-million dollar reparations for commercial damages.

The message sent to the market and the gaming community is clear and intimidating. As the calendar moves towards the official launch window, tolerance for sharing trade secrets has come to an end. The aggressive use of the American judicial system demonstrates that the company is willing to spend unlimited resources to track, identify and punish anyone who attempts to profit or gain notoriety at the expense of its flagship entertainment product.
