The dimensions of the Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) map were officially confirmed by Rockstar Games on August 28, 2026, revealing a game universe significantly larger than that seen in the developer’s previous titles.
Rob Nelson, co-director of Rockstar North, was responsible for presenting the new information during an exclusive preview session of the highly anticipated game, held within the company’s studios. The details were shared with YouTuber TGG, who followed the demonstration.
The complete state of Leonida, where the plot of GTA VI takes place, is approximately three times larger than the open world of Red Dead Redemption 2. The city of Vice City, one of Leonida’s regions, alone is twice the size of Los Santos, the setting for GTA V.
Details about the size of the new GTA VI map
- The entire territory of Leonida is twice the size of the GTA V map.
- It surpasses the universe of Red Dead Redemption 2 by three times.
- The city of Vice City alone is twice the size of Los Santos from GTA V.
In addition to an expanded territorial extension, GTA VI promises a greater density of content, with more non-playable characters (NPCs), objects, buildings and vegetation per square meter. This wealth of detail could be seen during an extended 26-minute showing of the game, which took place recently.
The impressive length of the GTA VI campaign
The game’s longevity is also surprising. Rob Nelson revealed to the New York Times that, in his most recent experience with GTA VI, carried out in February 2026, it took around 80 hours to complete the main campaign, including some optional objectives with narrative implications. For comparison, Red Dead Redemption 2 generally offers a campaign of between 50 and 60 hours for most players.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, and will be available for PlayStation 5 (PS5) and Xbox Series X|S.
