Lack of chips due to AI forces Google to restrict RAM on Android

Tech giant Google has established unprecedented rules for RAM control in the Android ecosystem, in direct response to the global semiconductor shortage, driven by high demand for high-performance chips for artificial intelligence language models. The central objective of this rigorous measure is to preserve the fluidity of the systems, especially on entry-level cell phones that have modest hardware. To adapt to this new reality, software creators have until February 2027 to reduce the resource consumption of their programs.

How the Semiconductor Shortage Affects Global Electronics Production

  • Artificial intelligence-driven server infrastructures are absorbing almost all of the world’s share of storage and volatile memory.
  • The search for high-performance processing units has skyrocketed, driven by technology companies’ race for autonomous agents.
  • The supply chain deficit severely affects the vehicle industry, worsening the situation for manufacturers such as Nexperia and the production of DRAM modules.

With parts deliveries restricted and manufacturing costs soaring, mobile phone brands are adopting drastic strategies to maintain profit margins. One part of the industry decided to cut the amount of internal storage and RAM from the factory, while others pass the final bill into the buyer’s pocket. If before the cheapest models on the market hit the shelves with between 6 GB and 8 GB of memory, today the standard has dropped to just 4 GB, a technical limitation that severely compromises agility in daily use.

To overcome this hardware bottleneck, the new Android system requirements will act as a strict inspector on simpler devices. If a software exceeds the stipulated processing quota, the platform will intervene immediately, reducing the speed of the task or forcing the application to close to avoid general crashes. The owner of the search engine advised programming studios to focus their technical reviews on three fundamental pillars: dynamic memory management, the weight of bitmap image files and the compilation of the DEX code.

Mandatory Strategies for Dynamic Allocation Control

Dynamic consumption refers to the temporary space that a program requires from the system while it is being actively run by the user. The new guidance requires software engineers to create more aggressive disposal routines, clearing data from RAM at the exact moment the task is no longer a priority. In practice, this means that minimizing the screen or pausing browsing should instantly free up resources for the rest of the phone.

The weight of graphic elements in crashing basic cell phones

Another point of maximum attention for the developer community is the rendering of complex visual elements. Although bitmap formats are the industry standard for delivering high-resolution images, they require a colossal chunk of processing when compared to blocks of plain text. Excessive loading of these textures can overwhelm the smartphone’s capacity in a matter of seconds, which is why Google has started to demand smarter compression techniques and on-demand visual loading.

The crisis that threatens the future of affordable smartphones

The increase in the price of memory chips caused a real paralysis in the segment of phones aimed at low-income consumers. In the current situation, consumers face extreme difficulty finding a cheap device that delivers fluid navigation, being forced to accept a reality where hardware has regressed, but prices continue to rise.

How Microsoft is dealing with computer shortages

The scarcity scenario is not limited to mobile devices, it also affects the personal computer ecosystem, where Microsoft needed to adapt its speech. The Redmond giant now guarantees that Windows 11 can operate stably with just 8 GB of RAM, a change in stance that slows down the historic race for increasingly higher specifications and focuses on deep optimization of the operating system.

Pessimistic projections point to bottlenecks in the industry until the next decade

The horizon for the normalization of the production chain is not encouraging, according to the main semiconductor suppliers on the planet. SK Hynix, one of the largest global manufacturers in the sector, calculates that the peak of the supply crisis will occur exactly in 2027, with negative consequences that should restrict the technology market until at least 2030.

Cleaning useless codes becomes a rule for app approval

To close the crackdown on wasted hardware, the Android team declared war on poorly programmed files. It is common practice in the industry for studios to release updates full of dead programming lines or redundant functions, inflating the size of the software unnecessarily. As of now, Google Play Store rules require creators to run their projects through compression tools like R8, ensuring a mandatory reduction of at least 25% in the total code volume before publishing.

Faced with a market with stagnant innovations and prohibitive prices, cell phone owners are adopting the same cautious behavior as PC users, delaying changing their equipment as much as possible. This freeze in sales has forced major technology brands to change their commercial strategies, investing heavily in software updates that can extend the useful life and improve the performance of devices that are already in customers’ hands.
