Former NFL quarterback and current CBS Sports analyst Tony Romo has had his driver’s license suspended for six months. The ruling comes after he pleaded not guilty to charges of driving under the influence on Sept. 1, 2026, according to Milwaukee County court records.

Romo, 46, was stopped by police in Milwaukee on July 23. At the time, one of the officers responsible for the approach reported having smelled a “strong odor of alcoholic beverage” coming from the former player. He was detained after failing field sobriety tests and later released.

The details of the arrest in Milwaukee in July

The initial approach resulted in Romo being charged for refusing to take a blood alcohol test after his arrest. Court records in Wisconsin later indicated he received three additional citations.

  • Dangerous overtaking on the right
  • First offense for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI)
  • Possession of open alcoholic beverages inside the vehicle

Penalties imposed by the county court

Following his plea and trial, a Milwaukee County court found Tony Romo guilty of the offenses. In addition to the suspension of the license, the court ordered additional strict measures.

  • Mandatory installation of an ignition interlock device in any vehicle owned, registered or operated by you.
  • Participation in and completion of an alcoholism assessment program.
  • Payment of a fine of US$784.

Romo explains addiction due to chronic pain

In a statement released on his social media, Tony Romo addressed the circumstances that led him to the situation. He mentioned that the multiple back surgeries that ended his NFL career left him in “constant, debilitating pain.”

According to Romo, this condition led him to resort to medication, culminating in alcohol dependence. He emphasized the importance of taking full responsibility for your actions and seeking necessary changes in your life. The former athlete said he was working together with a team of doctors to take care of his health.

Uncertain future in CBS Sports analyst career

Tony Romo’s NFL career lasted from 2004 to 2016, during which time he participated in four Pro Bowls playing exclusively for the Dallas Cowboys. Since 2017, he has served as the lead analyst for NFL games at CBS Sports, a prominent position.

Currently, he remains away from his duties at the broadcaster. CBS Sports President David Berson said in August that Romo’s future with the company is an “evolving situation that we are still evaluating.” Meanwhile, JJ Watt has been tapped to replace him on CBS’ top NFL broadcast team.
