Asian automaker BYD has started a mass recall involving 88,981 units of the Qin Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid sedan in the Chinese market. The corrective procedure was motivated by the identification of a critical anomaly in the lithium battery packs, an essential component that, when failed, compromises drivability and the integrity of the occupants. The cars included in this campaign left Asian assembly lines between January 2021 and September 2023.

The government body responsible for supervision, the State Administration for Market Regulation of China (SAMR), has already officially documented the case. According to the technical report submitted by the manufacturer, the chronic defect originates from discrepancies during the construction of the electrical harness responsible for measuring the voltage of the energy accumulator. This reading failure sends corrupted data to the core module, which could result in an abrupt cut of traction on the move or, in the worst case scenario, trigger a structural fire due to overheating of the cells.

Representatives of the automotive brand have publicly stated that the real chances of a total collapse are statistically small, classifying the recall as a strictly preventive maneuver to protect the consumer base. The company guaranteed that the entire dealership network is oriented to carry out the required repairs without any financial burden for the owners of the affected sedans.

Understand how the assembly error affects the sedan’s electrical system

The epicenter of the mechanical problem is located in the physical arrangement of the cables within the high voltage compartment. Engineering reports indicate that millimetric variations in the production line cause the harness to undergo non-standard mechanical pressure, drastically reducing the useful life of the insulating material and impairing the fidelity of the electrical impulses sent to the Battery Management System (BMS).

As the months pass and the natural vibration of daily use wears on this part, it blocks accurate communication about the charge level and individual health of each lithium module. The imminent danger lies in the instantaneous interruption of the flow of energy to the electric drive, forcing the vehicle to stop suddenly in the middle of the road, a scenario that exponentially increases the probability of serious rear-end collisions on fast-flowing highways.

Repair strategy involves software update and parts exchange

To mitigate immediate risks, the manufacturer structured a contingency plan divided into two fronts. The initial stage is based on sending a remote data package (OTA technology) to all chassis involved, the objective of which is to refine the mathematical parameters of the control software so that it can anticipate any electrical oscillation in the harness and issue a visual alert on the instrument panel before the mechanical failure occurs.

The second phase of the protocol, considered the most critical, requires the physical presence of the car at an authorized workshop in the network. Specialized mechanics will do partial disassembly to inspect the power housing and, if they detect any crushing or premature wear in the wiring, they will install an entirely new, redesigned component. The after-sales department is committed to contacting each customer to organize the flow of appointments.

Recent history shows an accumulation of summonses due to thermal failures

The case involving the Qin Plus DM-i does not represent an isolated event in the Asian giant’s recent calendar, highlighting the quality control bottlenecks that arise when an automaker accelerates its production to dominate the global market. In just October of the previous year, the company had already had to recall more than 115,000 units of Tang DM-i and Yuan Pro sports utility vehicles, also citing the risk of spontaneous combustion in the storage modules.

Weeks before this episode, in September, a distinct failure in the power converters led to the recall of 96 thousand examples of the Dolphin and Yuan Plus lines. Adding the three corrective operations in such a short interval, the volume of cars temporarily returned to dealerships exceeds the mark of 300 thousand units, a direct reflection of the more punitive and attentive stance that the Chinese government has adopted in relation to the safety of so-called New Energy Vehicles (NEVs).

Chinese government pressure on battery industry increases

The Asian territory currently has the largest fleet of electrified cars on the planet, which has forced regulatory entities such as SAMR to tighten their grip on hidden manufacturing defects. Media mishaps involving several automakers in recent years have turned the chemical stability of lithium-ion into a national security issue. State audits now examine everything from the millimetric standardization of assembly mats to the cyber shielding of management modules.

Major industrial conglomerates, including BYD itself and colossal suppliers such as CATL and CALB, operate under a constant magnifying glass from traffic authorities. Beijing’s goal with this aggressive oversight is twofold: to shield the end consumer from catastrophic failures that generate distrust in technology and, simultaneously, to ensure that China does not lose its undisputed hegemony in the energy transition of global mobility.

Official guidance for owners of defective models

Over the next few weeks, the brand’s relationship department will send notifications via the official app, text messages and email to owners of almost 89 thousand sedans. The board’s express recommendation is that drivers do not passively wait for contact, but access the company’s internet portal and enter the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to immediately confirm whether their asset is on the risk list.

While the digital correction via the internet occurs invisibly for those who have an active 4G or 5G signal on the panel, the mechanical inspection cannot be neglected under any circumstances. The automaker reinforces that ignoring the summons letter keeps the vehicle vulnerable to short circuits, transferring the responsibility for possible future accidents to the owner who did not comply with the preventive maintenance schedule required by law.

Brand’s commercial performance ignores technical crises and breaks records

Interestingly, the sequence of engineering failures did not damage the company’s commercial reputation at dealerships. The October financial statement revealed a significant jump in exports and domestic registrations, surpassing the impressive barrier of 441 thousand vehicles delivered in just thirty days, with the numbers divided as follows:

  • The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) family led profits and accounted for more than 214 thousand negotiations, representing a 31% jump compared to the same period in the previous cycle.
  • The division of purely electric models (BEV) followed the strong pace, registering the departure of approximately 223 thousand units from stores.

The overwhelming preference for hybrid engines illustrates the behavior of the Chinese driver, who seeks the economy of running on electricity within urban centers, but still demands the safety of a combustion fuel tank for long journeys, a market reading that has consolidated the manufacturer at the top of the world rankings.
