Independent software group Superstar South Studio executed the open-world game Grand Theft Auto V natively on the original release of the Nintendo Switch console without relying on cloud transmission services. The hardware ran everything locally. Nintendo launched that baseline version of the portable machine with an integrated Nvidia Tegra X1 processor and four gigabytes of shared memory for operating tasks.

Programmers compile Rockstar Games project for hybrid device

Engineers involved with the project utilized functional sections of leaked Rockstar Games source code to compile software instructions directly for the specific hardware architecture of the console. Images published online by the developers showed the software loading screen followed by the opening moments of the single-player campaign shortly before technical instability disrupted the execution.

During an initial video demonstration shared by Superstar South Studio, the modified game loaded the opening scene of the prologue mission in Ludendorff, but frequent frame rate drops degraded performance until the console operating system terminated execution abruptly due to an insufficient amount of available memory.
