Younger adults face rising incidence of malignant tumors

Medical oncologist Gustavo Benfatti Olivato reported that individuals under the age of 50 recorded a steady increase in malignant tumor rates between 1995 and 2021 across several countries. The sharpest rises occurred among patients under 40 years old.

Affected anatomical sites and medical theories under evaluation

The uptick involves malignancies of the colon, rectum, breast, endometrium, kidney, pancreas, stomach, and thyroid, which clinicians preliminarily link to obesity, physical inactivity, alcohol intake, and environmental pollutants.

Researchers identified distinct shifts in both the composition and metabolic activity of gut bacteria in individuals diagnosed with colorectal tumors before turning 50. The causes remain under investigation. Scientists have not yet confirmed whether these alterations in the intestinal flora trigger the disease directly or merely represent an internal consequence of the developing pathology itself.

Screening access fails to explain advanced clinical presentations

Expanded access to diagnostic testing accounts for a portion of the recorded thyroid cases, yet young adults frequently arrive at medical clinics presenting with advanced stages of disease. Furthermore, the surge of malignancies in organs that lack routine preventive screening for younger age cohorts, such as the pancreas, refutes the argument that enhanced screening alone drives this epidemiological shift.

Genetic mutations and screening protocol guidelines

Inherited genetic mutations associated with Lynch syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, familial adenomatous polyposis, and the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes explain only a limited fraction of all cataloged clinical cases.

Dr. Gustavo Benfatti Olivato explained that surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy administered to patients in their 30s and 40s trigger long-lasting complications affecting fertility, professional careers, sexual health, and emotional well-being for individuals who will live with treatment sequelae for multiple decades. Clinical guidelines currently mandate the initiation of routine colorectal screening at age 45 for individuals at standard risk. Expanding routine testing indiscriminately would generate unneeded hospital expenditures and subject people without formal clinical indications to invasive procedures.
