Apple Watch Series 12 brings live audio intelligence tools
Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 on September 9, 2026, centering the device on artificial intelligence tools powered by speech and ambient sound processing. The smartwatch features dedicated hardware capable of recording brief audio segments and delivering text summaries directly through the digital crown interface.
Speech tracking tools arrive on the wrist
The system introduces Live Rewind to display transcripts of the last 15 seconds of detected audio after a user presses the Digital Crown twice. Owners can read the spoken conversation on the display, question Siri about specific phrases, or store the text inside the Siri application. Siri Recap uses ambient listening to assemble summaries with automatic titles and bullet points after a discussion concludes.
Both transcription features enter beta testing later in 2026 in English for the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Apple Watch Ultra 4.
Audio intelligence functions expand across daily tasks
- Sound Recognition alerts individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to sirens, alarms, doorbells, or crying babies without requiring an iPhone nearby.
- Live Rewind captures 15 seconds of recent audio and turns it into readable text with a double press of the Digital Crown.
- Siri Recap processes ambient discussions to generate concise bullet points and structural titles inside the Siri app.
- Shazam identifies ambient songs and places the track title and artist name on the Music Recognition widget in Smart Stack.
The device runs on an S11 processor, which supports battery life of 10 hours during outdoor training sessions. Quick charging replenishes 12 hours of operational time in 15 minutes.
Sensors monitor continuous cardiac rates and longevity
Redesigned optical and electrical heart sensors take physiological readings every five seconds, an interval 60 times more frequent than previous generations. Cycle Tracking expands functionality to include support for perimenopause and menopause. A reorganized Health application introduces Insights and Longevity sections, incorporating a Health Age calculation that weighs physical markers against chronological age. Pairing the watch with an iPhone camera enables movement reviews for flexibility, balance, and muscular strength through private on-device processing.
Users can also calculate VO2 max levels by combining the smartwatch with AirPods Pro 3 or compatible external cardiac equipment.
Retail pricing begins at standard baseline levels
The aluminum model starts at $399, while titanium versions cost $699 and ceramic editions reach $899 ahead of shipments scheduled for September 18, 2026. Buyers can access the Apple Upgrade program through monthly installment plans spanning 12 or 24 months, with rates beginning at $11.99 per month. The aluminum shell incorporates Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple designated as “tougher than any smartwatch glass and 60 percent tougher than the Ion-X of previous aluminum models.”
Available finishes include space gray, black, light gold, and dark bronze in aluminum, radiant gold and natural titanium in metal, as well as night blue and pearl white in ceramic. Preorders began September 9, 2026.
Executive change follows annual hardware cycle
The introduction represents an early rollout overseen by John Ternus, who assumed the position of Apple chief executive officer on September 1, 2026, after Tim Cook departed the leadership role. Ternus previously managed hardware engineering and supervised the development of earlier watch releases. The $399 baseline matches the introductory price point set during the prior cycle for the Series 11, a 9.7mm device that brought 5G cellular connectivity, blood pressure hypertension tracking, and sleep evaluation scores across 42mm and 46mm chassis dimensions. The stable pricing structure arrived after financial adjustments elevated prices across multiple corporate product categories earlier in 2026.
