XBOX lets players convert physical discs into digital copies

Jason Ronald, vice president of Next Generation at XBOX, announced on August 26, 2026, a new feature allowing players to unlock digital versions of games they already own on disc across multiple hardware generations. The update addresses libraries built over decades through both optical discs and online storefront purchases.

XBOX aims to streamline how these personal collections transfer to future hardware.

The initiative introduces digital ownership perks for physical media across the broader XBOX ecosystem. Registered members in the XBOX Insiders testing tier will gain access to the feature starting August 31, 2026. This allows preliminary validation before wider public rollout.

The engineering team tied the update to long-term preservation efforts as distribution technologies evolve.

Players can claim a digital license by placing an eligible physical disc inside an XBOX One or XBOX Series X console and opening the software, which immediately registers the product to the user profile across connected systems. Once verified, accounts gain access to cloud streaming and cross-device functionality through XBOX Play Anywhere and XBOX Cloud Gaming. Physical discs still work.

XBOX will launch the functionality with thousands of titles before expanding the catalog over time. Ronald noted that this staged deployment ensures purchased games remain playable for future years.
