Federal authorities arrested 22-year-old Singaporean citizen Malone Lam at a leased property in Miami on September 18, 2024, following his leadership of a cybercrime operation that stole $245 million in cryptocurrency from a single victim. The defendant entered a guilty plea to one count of participating in a racketeering conspiracy and now confronts a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

Lam admitted to the charge.

Between October 2023 and May 2025, the 12-member cybercrime ring deployed social engineering calls while masquerading as representatives from Coinbase, Gemini, Google, and Yahoo to trigger fraudulent account access alerts on targeted devices and convince wealthy digital asset owners that their online wallets faced compromise. Lam tracked high-net-worth targets, deceived victims into surrendering security credentials, and coordinated the laundering of stolen funds through decentralized ledgers. Court records show the operation took sums ranging between $800,000 and tens of millions from various individuals.

Origins of the syndicate inside video game servers

The network formed among players inside online servers for the sandbox game Minecraft, where young computer users met and coordinated illegal electronic intrusions. Lam initially traveled to the United States in 2023 to meet associates Jeandiel Serrano and Veer Chetal, who joined as foundational members of the conspiracy.

The enterprise recruited participants across multiple jurisdictions to split technical assignments and communications tasks. One younger associate, Marlo Ferro, entered the group during his teenage years and later received a prison term of 6.5 years after carrying out an in-person burglary at a target’s home to seize a physical cryptocurrency hardware wallet. Digital intrusions remained the group’s primary method for seizing account balances across the country.

Extravagant expenditures on luxury assets and nightlife

The syndicate channeled tens of millions of dollars into lavish personal lifestyles across major metropolitan hubs. Members diverted stolen proceeds toward several luxury acquisitions and services:

  • Exotic supercars valued at up to $3.8 million.
  • Nightclub outings in Florida that totaled $500,000 for a single evening.
  • Luxury watches and designer handbags priced between $100,000 and $500,000.
  • Chartered private jet flights and full-time armed security details.
  • Leased luxury estates in Miami, Los Angeles, and the Hamptons.

Investigators tracked the asset purchases to verify the flow of illicit digital tokens through domestic and offshore payment processors.

Federal prosecutors target cryptocurrency theft networks

US Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro confirmed that federal prosecutors will continue pursuing criminal groups that target cryptocurrency holders through electronic trickery. “If you build a cybercrime empire, we will find you, dismantle your operation, and hold you accountable,” Pirro stated. She noted that the defendant directed an international network that preyed on victims through deception, invaded privacy, and took hundreds of millions of dollars in digital currencies.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation division managed the joint financial probe.

Upcoming proceedings in federal court

A federal judge in Florida scheduled a formal status hearing for Lam on December 8. Court administrators have not yet selected a final date for the formal sentencing proceeding.
