Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, equipping both hardware lineups with an internally developed C2 modem for 5G cellular connectivity. Both use proprietary chips.

Internal cellular chip powers two flagship lines

The official presentation disproved prior industry expectations that the custom silicon would lack millimeter-wave compatibility in the United States and require third-party hardware from Qualcomm for domestic carriers. Technical specifications confirm that the smaller-screen iPhone 18 Pro carries the new cellular unit directly on its main board. Apple omitted the component from the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max, leaving that premium model reliant on cellular modems from Qualcomm.

Company documentation provided no explanation regarding why the larger flagship missed the in-house connectivity hardware. Updated technical sheets reiterated that only the smaller Pro and the folding model feature the architecture.

Performance gains and technical frequency bands

Apple confirmed that the proprietary C2 modem uses artificial intelligence to stabilize cellular network signals, supports American mmWave frequencies, exceeds the upload throughput recorded on the earlier C1X silicon, and lowers overall device power consumption by 15%. The American release supports both sub-6GHz connectivity via 4×4 MIMO channels and high-frequency millimeter-wave spectrum. The British hardware variant operates strictly across sub-6GHz frequencies without mmWave compatibility.

Both smartphones combine the cellular modem with an in-house N1 wireless chip designed to handle local radio communications. This dedicated component manages Wi-Fi 7 performance, Bluetooth 6 protocols, and Thread smart-home connectivity.

Pricing tiers and release schedules

Retail pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro opens at $1,199 across burgundy, glacier, silver, and black exterior finishes. Preorders for the device begin on September 12 with storage configurations spanning 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. The Qualcomm-equipped iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299 across those same colorways and memory capacities.

The folding iPhone Duo debuts at a base price of $1,999 in star white and night sky color options. Customers can choose storage tiers of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB when reservations open on October 16 ahead of retail store arrivals on October 23.
