Sony deployed system software update 14.0 to PlayStation 5 beta testers on 8 September 2026, adding an artificial intelligence graphics upgrade known as Enhanced PSSR 2.0. The company designed this visual improvement to sharpen image quality across supported titles without demanding additional processing strain from the hardware.

The upgraded machine learning upscaling algorithm reconstructs lower-resolution video frames at a higher resolution to deliver sharper and significantly more detailed graphics in supported PlayStation 5 titles while preserving an entirely smooth frame rate across compatible gameplay sessions. Enhanced PSSR 2.0 remains completely exclusive to the PlayStation 5 Pro edition of the hardware. The feature operates automatically.

Sony activated Enhanced PSSR by default on PlayStation 5 Pro consoles running the 14.0 firmware, eliminating any requirement for owners to adjust options manually inside the hardware system settings menu.

System software adjustments alter console behavior

The firmware revision implements several structural changes affecting Bluetooth accessory connectivity and internal hardware functions on standard PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro devices. Firmware testers identified specific functional modifications applied directly to the hardware options:

  • Rest Mode will not engage whenever a user switches off the Bluetooth radio.
  • HDMI Link disconnects immediately under identical configuration adjustments.
  • General performance and stability updates modify background system routines across both editions.

Sony combined these accessory management restrictions with general stability adjustments scheduled for the base operating code. The manufacturer has not indicated whether alternative connectivity options will bypass these automated shutoff triggers. Similar firmware adjustments previously addressed background operating functions across prior console versions.

Expected rollout schedule for the public firmware build

Registered participant groups tested update 14.0 over the preceding two weeks to detect operating errors before wider distribution.

Sony plans to release the final 14.0 build to general users before the end of September 2026. Distribution schedules remain subject to internal evaluations during the ongoing testing phase.

Players react to upcoming console firmware changes

Online user SecureNet5333 described the release on Reddit as a “major update to patch the jailbreak before GTA VI.” Another participant named QuicktimeSam addressed the company directly, asking: “Give me the ability to rearrange my trophy list, Sony! Please.” Platform user toastiegremlin92 asked whether Sony is “disabling my disk drive to prepare for the no-disk future,” in reference to plans regarding physical media distribution from January 2028.

Commenter MaxRD jokingly labeled the package a “major stability upgrade.” Reader THawk concluded the community exchange by writing that “finally, the Earthquake Proof Update is here.”
