WhatsApp deployed an in-chat search tool on September 18, 2026, across conversations and channels for Apple iOS users. The software modification cuts the time required to retrieve archived messages in long-standing discussion threads.
The capability arrived as part of WhatsApp Messenger build 26.36.74, accessible through the official App Store. Users operate the search function directly inside active conversations without opening external screens. The query operates instantly.
Search shortcut activates during conversation scrolling
By pulling the screen downward to view past exchanges, iPhone owners activate a dedicated search button located near the top interface that allows direct keyword input and seamless navigation through matching entries with a single tap.

The interface element hides automatically when screen navigation reaches the bottom of the feed, preserving a clean workspace. Previous versions on iPhone forced individuals to enter the contact information panel, select an internal search command, and wait for the application to reload the chat window.
Broadcast channels adopt identical lookup functionality
WhatsApp expanded the feature into Channels, where continuous daily announcements frequently submerge older updates. The search bar lets readers identify essential notices across feeds carrying hundreds of entries. Readers navigate channel results through the exact query mechanics deployed in private conversations.
Engineers placed the icon at the top after testing alternative placements along the bottom margin during August. Meta distributes the change progressively to iPhone devices, while Android versions carry no established release schedule.
