A Chinese Long March 7A carrier rocket exploded roughly 85 seconds after liftoff from the Wenchang space center on Hainan island on August 10, 2026. The catastrophic breakup destroyed the ChinaSat-4B telecommunications satellite before the vehicle could deliver its payload toward orbit. State news agency Xinhua confirmed that the rocket departed at 8:02 pm Beijing time before experiencing an unexpected in-flight anomaly.

Video recordings reveal disintegration shortly after launch

Spectators gathered near the coastal spaceport captured footage on mobile devices showing the rocket rupturing into flames one minute and 25 seconds into the flight. Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Center for Astrophysics, Harvard & Smithsonian, analyzed the circulating video recordings and determined that the Chinese rocket broke apart completely while still flying at a relatively low altitude and at modest velocity over Hainan.

The premature mid-air disintegration prevented any rocket stages or satellite hardware from attaining Earth orbit. The accident halted an unbroken run of successful orbital missions for the Long March 7A following earlier operational hurdles. China National Radio originally posted a dispatch on a Baidu-hosted platform identifying the lost payload as Zhongxing-4B before deleting the article. That deleted coverage also classified the rocket as a modified version of the basic Long March 7 launcher.

Wenchang officials confirmed the loss.

Communication spacecraft lineage links to 2024 orbital mission

The lost ChinaSat-4B satellite shared its design heritage with ChinaSat-4A, an orbital platform that entered active service during 2024. Official Chinese releases previously described the earlier sister spacecraft as a dedicated node providing voice, data, radio, and television broadcasts. High-altitude satellites operating in geostationary trajectories routinely execute critical communications tasks across wide territories:

  • Distributing digital radio and television broadcasts across vast continental areas
  • Delivering voice transmissions and data services to remote communities without landline coverage
  • Maintaining uninterrupted communications for regions lacking terrestrial infrastructure networks

Government authorities have not confirmed whether ChinaSat-4B carried identical transponder equipment or targeted the exact demographic served by ChinaSat-4A. Aerospace technicians developed the medium-lift Long March 7A specifically to propel heavy communications payloads toward high ge
