iPhone Duo folding screen film can be replaced at Apple stores for 19 dollars
Apple will allow customers to replace the protective nano-texture cover layer on the iPhone Duo folding display without discarding the entire flexible panel underneath. The maintenance option costs $19 in the United States under the AppleCare+ extended warranty program, giving users an affordable path to refresh a scratched or worn top sheet rather than paying for a complete internal screen reconstruction.
The structural purpose of this outer layer was detailed by Apple vice president of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron during an interview on October 1, 2026. The executive noted that the custom matte finish actively suppresses glare, limits repetitive mechanical strain along the central hinge mechanism, and visibly minimizes crease formation across the 7.6-inch folding display over extended ownership.
“The matte screen finish does an excellent job of, I would say, minimizing the crease. But there is a cover layer on top, and we did a significant amount of engineering work to help that layer withstand wear for as long as possible, and to make sure that you get the most out of its performance. It is, in fact, replaceable, which is a great thing for the consumer, that you can take that layer off and put a new one on,” Bergeron said in remarks to Italian creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi.
Service fees outlined for internal panel and glass maintenance
Under the official AppleCare+ fee structure, the $19 fee for the nano-texture sheet stands well below the standard $99 service deductible charged when the flexible OLED assembly suffers catastrophic structural failure. Incidents confined to the exterior front or back glass panels will require a $29 service charge, matching the established deductible applied to standard flagship hardware. Tech creator Quinn Nelson of Snazzy Labs highlighted that these deductible thresholds align directly with traditional company pricing models, despite the premium $1,999 starting price of the foldable phone.

Why certified technicians must handle delicate folding panel repairs
While technology journalist Nicolas Lellouche observed that stripping off the matte cover could theoretically leave owners with a glossy surface, hardware analysts strongly urge against do-it-yourself peeling. Properly detaching and aligning the component demands specialized mechanical equipment to prevent puncturing the fragile OLED substrate, restricting the replacement procedure to Apple Store genius bars and Apple Authorized Service Providers. Competing foldable devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold family have long carried strict warnings against consumer removal of factory screen films, which can cause permanent display blackouts if pulled improperly.
