Grand Theft Auto VI development involved extensive field research trips across Florida, where creative teams spent years documenting nightlife, coastal environments, and municipal infrastructure. The fieldwork directly shaped the fictional state of Leonida, an open-world setting built to roughly double the landmass featured in Grand Theft Auto V.

Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative at Rockstar Games, revealed the scope of these expeditions in an interview published on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. According to Humphries, writers and visual artists traveled to strip clubs, dance venues, and public coastlines, crossed the Everglades and the Florida Keys, and conducted late-night patrols alongside former police officers to capture authentic regional dynamics across both affluent enclaves and impoverished neighborhoods.

Fieldwork across Florida shaped the state of Leonida

“We go and try to experience everything, from riding around areas at night with ex-cops, to going to strip clubs and nightclubs, spending time on the beach, in the Everglades, down in the Keys, and beyond,” Humphries stated during the interview. He noted that contrast between extremes of wealth and poverty provided the core creative foundation for the project.

“This game and its stories really thrive in an environment where you have rich people and poor people right next door to each other,” Humphries said. “And crime and corruption is the thread that pulls everyone together.”

The central storyline follows dual protagonists Jason and Lucia as they navigate the criminal underground of Leonida. Humphries confirmed that while the primary narrative directs the duo through numerous towns and natural landmarks, the campaign will not escort players to every corner of the world, leaving substantial territory open for independent exploration.

Grand Theft Auto VI production details and release schedule

  • Platforms: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S
  • Target launch date: November 19, 2026
  • Lead development studio: Rockstar North in Edinburgh, Scotland
  • Territory scale: state of Leonida, approximately twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V
  • Coverage: 14-page exclusive feature published in Game Informer issue 382 with 12 new screenshots

Six distinct regions expand the Grand Theft Auto VI map

The newly created state of Leonida marks the series’ first return to Vice City in 20 years, following the 2006 debut of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, and modernizes the setting for the first time since the original 1997 release and 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Rockstar North, under the direction of co-studio head and head of development Aaron Garbut, structured the territory around six primary regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.

The studio utilized multi-year location scouting to ensure that regional subcultures, environmental foliage, architecture, and road systems mirrored real-world counterparts from South Florida up through northern rural counties. Early development leaks had previously revealed the presence of adult entertainment venues within the game, a detail now contextualized by the narrative department as part of broader efforts to document contemporary local leisure industries.

Unconfirmed gameplay mechanics and promotional timeline

Rockstar Games published the production background alongside 12 screenshots in a 14-page feature for Game Informer, but the publisher has not released dedicated video trailers or gameplay demonstrations detailing interactive interior mechanics for strip clubs or commercial establishments. The game remains on schedule for its official console launch on November 19, 2026.
