Gears of War: E-Day rebuilds its gore system to heighten combat brutality

The Coalition redesigned the gore and visual physics of Gears of War: E-Day to counter player desensitization and restore physical impact to every firefight. Studio leadership confirmed that the team invested heavily in anatomical rendering, including fully modeled internal skeletons, dynamic blood pooling, and expanded dismemberment systems across all combat encounters.

According to studio art director Aryan Hanbeck, earlier entries in the franchise leaned into stylized depictions of blood, which gradually dulled the visceral reaction of longtime players during combat. To reverse that shift, the studio engineered realistic body damage in the prequel to emphasize the human cost of the Locust invasion without turning the presentation into gratuitous shock value.

“Think about getting a headshot, right, a really good headshot. A lot of work goes into that moment, into what happens on the screen when you take a headshot. There’s an audio component to that, too, as well as all the effects – how high the blood spurts go, how much mist we leave behind, what the body does afterwards… So, it’s not just the weapon itself, it’s what you see and hear when you do what it’s supposed to do, or when you get up close and you melee with [your Lancer or Breechshot] or exe…,” said Hanbeck during a studio interview conducted in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Creative director Matt Searcy noted that encounter pacing in Gears of War: E-Day functions like a compressed spring, building sustained tension throughout a firefight until close-quarters brutality provides an energetic release. “And there’s a big investment in gore in this game. That’s a huge aspect of [what makes combat so satisfying],” Searcy explained. The technical implementation integrates internal skeletal structures beneath character models, allowing specialized weapons to expose bones and tear flesh dynamically as engagements unfold.

“We had this feeling that fans were getting a bit desensitised to the violence in Gears, because you’re just going around doing all sorts of stuff and blood was a little bit more stylised in the past few games. So, to make you feel every single kill, we wanted the game to be a bit more realistic – not enough for you to get grossed out, but enough to be like ‘wow, some shit’s gone down in this world’,” Hanbeck stated.

The Coalition balances military horror and squad banter

The narrative of Gears of War: E-Day takes place 14 years before the events of the original Gears of War, chronicling Emergence Day through the perspectives of young soldiers Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the subterranean Locust horde breaches the city of Kalona. The story places greater emphasis on civilian casualties and urban destruction, giving the high-stakes combat a grittier foundation than previous entries in the series.

Despite the darker subject matter, brand director Nicole Fawcett pointed out that the studio preserved the balance between bleak atmosphere and dark squad humor that defines the franchise. “It’s not a game or franchise where we want to take ourselves so seriously. And I think it’s the contrast that makes Gears so special: it’s not one or the other. The humorous moments are usually kind-of relatable like soldier talk, gallows humour, dark humour – and we’ve been trying to get back to that squad banter that’s kind of dark but you can’t help but laugh at,” Fawcett said.

Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the production incorporates proprietary dismemberment code alongside MegaLights dynamic lighting technology to illuminate environmental carnage during night missions and underground skirmishes. The production marks the studio’s primary return to the mainline storyline following the release of Gears 5 in 2019.
