Local authorities in Armazém, southern Santa Catarina, were alerted after three funerary caskets left on the roadside of state highway SC-435 caught fire on the morning of Thursday, October 8, 2026. Flames consumed the units before municipal health inspectors and Military Police officers could carry out a formal on-site examination of the discarded material.

The caskets had been left in the rural community of São João do Capivari along the highway shoulder. The cluster consisted of two adult-sized units and a smaller child-sized casket featuring a painted skull and other markings across its lid. Initial records from the Military Police noted that the containers appeared aged without unmistakable proof of prior burial, while nearby residents pointed out clear signs of physical wear.

Surveillance cameras record cargo truck stopping near the drop site

A neighborhood resident notified the Military Police after acquaintances traveling along the roadway noticed the funerary structures placed on the gravel shoulder. The woman secured video recordings from her private home surveillance system, which sits directly across from the spot where the containers had been unloaded.

Security footage captured a box truck pulling over with its hazard lights flashing into a roadway turnout at approximately 10:44 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. Investigators treat that timestamp as the estimated window for the illegal dumping, though poor video clarity prevented officers from reading the license plate or discerning the driver.

Municipal health inspection confirms absence of human remains

Officials from the Armazém Health Surveillance department received an alert around 10:00 a.m. on Thursday to conduct an urgent sanitary check. Upon arriving alongside Military Police units, municipal inspectors discovered that all three caskets were already engulfed in fire. Law enforcement agencies have not yet identified who set the wooden structures ablaze.

Following an inspection of the smoldering debris, the Health Surveillance team and the Armazém City Hall determined that no skeletons or human remains were present. Technical staff also confirmed that the incident posed no biological or sanitary threat to families living in the surrounding area.

Health inspector Alex Cardoso da Rosa detailed the initial findings gathered during the municipal response. “We received the alert via messaging groups. We still cannot confirm whether these coffins had been used previously. It is now up to the Civil Police to conduct field inquiries so we can determine the next appropriate steps,” he said.

Investigators dismiss ritual rumors while pursuing environmental charges

The discovery sparked intense rumors across the municipality regarding suspected occult rituals and supernatural practices. Local talk intensified following claims about a woman dressed in black walking nearby, but police clarified that she was simply a resident distributing job resumes in search of employment.

Dumping industrial or specialized refuse along public roadways constitutes both a regulatory offense and an environmental crime under Brazilian legislation. The Civil Police launched an official inquiry to trace the origin of the caskets, track down the truck recorded on video, and hold those responsible for the abandonment and arson accountable.
