People without a registered profile or installed mobile application can now join voice and video conversations on WhatsApp following a global update launched by Meta on Wednesday (14). The guest calling feature runs free of charge through a computer web browser, removes call duration caps, and supports up to 32 simultaneous participants in a single session.

Both one-on-one conversations and group meetings support the web-based entry method, requiring only an active internet connection and an invitation link generated by an existing account holder. Outlining the rollout in an official statement on October 14, 2026, WhatsApp and Meta noted how the tool changes group communication: “With guest calling, you can now invite anyone to join a WhatsApp call – even if they don’t have a WhatsApp account. That means free, end-to-end encrypted calls for everyone with no time limits, so there are no abrupt cutoffs, scrambling to restart the call, or waiting for everyone to rejoin”.

Generating invitation links and managing the virtual waiting room

Initiating a session remains restricted to users who hold an active account on the latest Android or iOS versions of the messaging platform. To create a shareable web address, the registered organizer opens the application, navigates to the Calls tab, and selects the plus (+) icon. Once generated, that URL can be copied and distributed to coworkers, tutors, classmates, or external contacts regardless of what software they use.

Invitees who click the shared address do not need to download software or register a phone number to participate. Opening the link on a computer browser prompts the visitor to type a display name before placing them inside a virtual waiting room — a mechanism WhatsApp first introduced to its web client in July 2026 — until the host grants entry. To maintain end-to-end encryption without a registered profile, the web client automatically generates a unique session identifier that secures the audio and video streams for the duration of the call.

Technical specifications and interactive tools for browser guests

The guest calling system operates under specific parameters regarding group capacity, device requirements, and in-call collaboration tools for desktop browser participants:

  • Availability and cost: Global rollout at no cost, requiring only an active internet connection.
  • Room capacity: Supports direct one-on-one calls (1:1) and group sessions of up to 32 simultaneous people.
  • Session duration: Unlimited call time with no automatic cutoffs.
  • Host requirement: An active WhatsApp account is mandatory to generate and share invitation links.
  • Guest requirement: Access via a desktop computer browser without app installation or account sign-up.
  • Interactive features: Full support for computer screen sharing to review materials, a hand-raising button to request speaking turns, and on-screen reactions using the thumbs-up or heart emojis.

Privacy boundaries and host moderation controls

Admitting and retaining unregistered visitors falls entirely under the supervision of the user who created the call link, who can deny unfamiliar entry requests or disconnect guests at any point during the conversation. Beyond host moderation, the browser interface enforces strict functional limits to shield the personal data of registered mobile and desktop users participating in the same room.

Detailing these built-in safeguards, the official announcement from WhatsApp and Meta stated: “Anyone joining as a guest always needs the call host’s approval. Guests will enter a waiting room until the host lets them in and guests can be removed from the call at any time. Guests can’t see other participants’ phone numbers, send messages, or add anyone else directly to the call”.

Competition with video conferencing platforms and calendar plugins

Development of link-based calling for unregistered participants entered testing in September 2026, built upon the same underlying architecture that powers WhatsApp guest chats. By opening call access beyond its network of more than 3 billion users worldwide, the Meta-owned service positions itself against dedicated workplace and educational conferencing tools such as Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams, while matching the browser-based link functionality that Apple introduced for FaceTime.

Expanding the tool for corporate and academic scheduling involves connecting the calling system directly to external productivity software. “Later this year we’ll be rolling out new calendar integrations so you can create a WhatsApp call right from your Google or Outlook calendar. Simply install the WhatsApp plugin, connect your account, and add a WhatsApp call link to your invite,” the company explained in its October 14, 2026 release.

Once the dedicated extension is installed and linked to a registered profile, meeting invitations dispatched through Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook will automatically embed the room address for invitees with or without an account on the messenger. Meta has not yet disclosed an exact release day for the scheduling plugin, keeping the launch window set for the remainder of 2026.
