Over twelve years after a skiing accident changed his life, Michael Schumacher, now 57, still receives round-the-clock care at home. His family keeps nearly all of his medical condition out of public view. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion continues his rehabilitation across residences in Gland, in Switzerland, and Mallorca, in Spain.

Public interest in his health has not faded. Official medical bulletins are still scarce, so the few details that reach the public come from occasional, tightly managed updates and from people close to him. Those fragmented accounts show how demanding severe traumatic brain injury treatment is, and how many resources a patient like him needs over the long term.

Daily care and cautious reports on his condition

Michael Schumacher has been under constant medical attention since the accident in the French Alps in December 2013. In January 2026, Daily Mail journalist Jonathan McEvoy reported that he is no longer bedridden, sits in a wheelchair with help from his medical team and shows some interaction with his surroundings. That account did not come from an official family statement.

Flavio Briatore, Schumacher’s former boss at Benetton and now a consultant for Alpine, told Corriere della Sera in January 2026 that he prefers to remember Schumacher “smiling after victories”. In February 2026, former Italian driver Riccardo Patrese told a German publication that Schumacher could reportedly sit up, recognise faces and communicate through eye signals. Patrese also acknowledged that those reports relied on information up to six years old.

Corinna Schumacher, his wife, leads a strict policy of medical secrecy. In February 2025, the Wuppertal District Court in Germany sentenced three men in an attempted extortion case against the family. Markus Fritsche, a former security guard, received a two-year suspended sentence. Yilmaz Tozturkan was sentenced to three years in prison, and his son Daniel Lins received a six-month suspended sentence. The family has appealed Fritsche’s sentence, which it calls far too lenient.

Price of round-the-clock care for more than a decade

The Daily Mail estimates the cost of his treatment at “tens of thousands of pounds per week”. That figure is a press estimate, not an official one, and the family has sustained this level of care for more than ten years. The care depends on a multidisciplinary team of specialists, advanced equipment and constant supervision, with the goal of improving his quality of life and functional recovery.

Most of his treatment takes place at a custom-adapted mansion in Gland. The family also keeps a summer residence in Mallorca, which serves his medical needs as well. Jean Todt, his former Ferrari team principal, is one of the very few people who visit him regularly.

Seven world titles and a legacy that still stands

Beyond his health, Schumacher’s place in Formula 1 history remains secure. His record reflects his dominance, and his benchmarks still set a standard for drivers of later generations. His influence reaches technical development, team structures and the culture of the sport.

  • Seven Formula 1 World Championship titles: 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
  • 91 Grand Prix victories, a record that stood for many years.
  • Teams: Jordan (1991), Benetton (1991–1995), Ferrari (1996–2006) and Mercedes (2010–2012).
  • Two periods in Formula 1: 1991–2006 and 2010–2012.
  • Shares the record for most world titles with Lewis Hamilton, both with seven.

His years at Ferrari, alongside Ross Brawn and Jean Todt, are often cited as the period when his meticulous preparation and strategic skill set a new standard for driver and team cooperation. Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are still compared with him, both in driving style and in championship ambition.

Mick Schumacher follows his father’s path in motorsport

Mick Schumacher carries the Schumacher name in motorsport. He raced in Formula 1 for Haas in 2021 and 2022. He works as a reserve driver for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship, and fans and media often compare him with his father.

Corinna Schumacher has guarded her husband’s privacy and shaped the family’s strict media policy. The family keeps taking legal action against speculative or unauthorised reports. The case also raises broader questions about privacy for public figures and their relatives, and the family has asked for a harsher punishment for Fritsche.
