Roblox requires AI or ID age verification to allow chat and protect children

Roblox announced this Tuesday (18) the mandatory age verification to use chat on the platform. Usuários will have to present an official document with a photo or perform facial verification using artificial intelligence. The measure aims to prevent direct contact between children and unknown adults.

The change comes after a series of lawsuits against Estados Unidos that accuse the company of facilitating sexual predators’ access to minors. The platform, with more than 150 million monthly active users, a third of them under 13 years old, already had filters, but expanded the restrictions.

Implementation will be gradual. From December 2025, verification will be mandatory on Austrália, Nova Zelândia and Países Baixos. No beginning of 2026, the rule will apply to all countries.

How Reverification Works

Users who want to use chat must choose between two options. The first is to send a photo of an official document with date of birth. The second is to use the front camera of your cell phone or computer so that the AI, developed by the company Persona, can estimate age.

The system requests facial movements to confirm that the person is present. In Após analysis, the user is placed into age groups: under 9, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, or over 21.

Conversation restrictions by age group

The platform will limit conversations only between users in nearby lanes. Uma children aged 12, for example, will be able to speak to users up to 15 years old, but not to those aged 16 or over.

Worldwide rollout schedule

Verification began as optional this Tuesday. In December, it becomes mandatory in the three pilot countries already mentioned.

Starting Q1 2026, all global users will need to prove their age to access chat. The company reported that the accuracy of the AI ​​usually varies by up to two years for people between 5 and 25 years old.
