Grand Theft Auto 6 overhauled its wanted level structure and police response system in the region of Leonida on September 10, 2026, at 2:00 PM PDT. The franchise installment retains the escalating aggression of law enforcement as players commit offenses and accumulate stars on screen.

In previous entries, players could evade patrols simply by hiding out of sight. That mechanic has been revamped in the new game. Extended gameplay footage revealed how law enforcement pursuits now operate across Leonida.

The maximum six-star wanted level makes a return after being omitted from Grand Theft Auto 5, enabling the deployment of military forces against offenders during extreme street-level standoffs.

Police officers now monitor a much broader perimeter rather than restricting their search to the initial crime scene. Patrol vehicles actively sweep the entire territory of Leonida.

New icons below the wanted stars indicate the specific clues authorities hold on suspects. A security camera symbol requires players to destroy surveillance recordings, while an icon depicting two figures warns that law enforcement has spotted Jason and Lucia together. This indicator forces the protagonists to split up immediately to reduce police tracking.

A face icon signifies that suspects have been identified through facial recognition, requiring the use of masks or changes to Jason’s facial hair. Weapon or vehicle icons require players to discard equipment and swap rides right away.

Video demonstrations showcased only a fraction of the tactical police capabilities present in Grand Theft Auto 6.

The shade of the wanted stars shifts based on line-of-sight visual contact during a pursuit. Solid white indicates direct vision, while solid red signals active searches at the exact location of the incident. Outlined stars represent unknown identity—a scenario where Lucia openly disrespected a patrol without triggering an arrest attempt.

Police sweeps have abandoned the binary detection pattern of earlier Grand Theft Auto titles. That model is gone.

The minimap no longer displays the exact positions of patrol cars or their field-of-view cones. Drivers must now keep their eyes directly on the roads of Leonida. This update eliminates radar-guided navigation during high-speed escapes.

Activating Focus Mode allows players to highlight police positions through walls and solid structures. This feature assists players in navigating dangerous corners safely.

Pedestrians react dynamically to the open carry of firearms on sidewalks. In Leonida, carrying weapons on one’s back is permitted under state laws inspired by Florida. Citizens notify the police only if a weapon is actively aimed at the public.

Patrol cars initiate a response only after receiving alarms or witness reports. Gunfire targeting property or physical assaults instantly alerts emergency dispatchers.

Robberies require advance planning regarding escape routes, clean clothing, and avoiding cameras. Nighttime break-ins feature lower pedestrian traffic around commercial targets. Security footage at business establishments requires physical deletion of digital files.

Players must blend in as regular Leonida residents before executing illegal actions. In Grand Theft Auto 5, violent acts could be committed without the constant need for disguises.

The dynamic of police encounters will be tested on a large scale upon the commercial release set in Leonida.

The developer also modified vehicle theft mechanics across the open map. Additionally, hunting and fishing features received brand-new operational mechanics.
