Motorola published a preview of a new Razr foldable smartphone on September 10, 2026, moving away from the signature clamshell form factor of the product family. The promotional video highlights the outline of a book-style device that looks lower and broader, sharing proportions with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Apple iPhone Duo.

Motorola gave no timetable.

The release leaves out technical specifications and pricing details for retail channels. Even so, the revised physical structure confirms a strategic shift in hardware engineering for the Razr brand.

With this move, Motorola aligns with Samsung and Apple in embracing a shared design direction for flexible hardware.

Tech brands shift toward wider display formats

Samsung altered its hardware design for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 released this year. The company reconfigured the chassis to improve handling.

The lower and broader chassis opens into a 4:3 aspect ratio main display, giving applications, video playback, digital gaming, and intense multitasking operations significantly more usable surface area than the narrower internal panels featured on the previous folding generations.

Buyer response to the Samsung hardware demonstrates clear demand for the revised ergonomic footprint. Shoppers favored the redesigned dimensions over previous models.

Samsung sales figures indicate combined purchases of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra rose 30% above the Galaxy Z Fold 7 across the United States.

Both mobile phones account for roughly 80% of recent Galaxy Z transactions in North America. The two models dominate overall shipments within the series.

Apple entered the category through the iPhone Duo, building a closed profile that matches the dimensions of a passport.

The unfolded device offers a 7.6-inch screen built for media streaming, video games, and multitasking. That display surface gives mobile owners tablet space in a portable unit.

Motorola challenges competitors with expanded book design

Motorola holds an established footprint in the flexible phone market.

After improving the clamshell Razr line across multiple releases, the manufacturer marketed the Razr Fold as its inaugural book-style device. The release marked a direct diversification of the Razr family.

Technicians conducted benchmark tests on the Razr Fold in May, measuring performance against products from Google and Samsung.

The growing adoption of wider proportions across Motorola models and rival units pressures traditional vertical screens. The unfolded inner panel functions like a compact tablet.
