NASA released a detailed image of Pilares of Criação captured by Telescópio Espacial James Webb in 2022. The structure is in Nebulosa of Águia, about 6,500 light years from Terra. The near-infrared recording made it possible to visualize forming stars that remained hidden in previous photos taken in visible light.
The pillars are formed by clouds of gas and dust where intense stellar birth occurs. Algumas detected stars are only a few hundred thousand years old. Webb’s penetrating view shows red dots at the ends of the columns, which indicate protostars still surrounded by circumstellar material.
- The columns feature semi-opaque layers in reddish tones
- The blue background reveals distant galaxies and stars in the nebula itself
- Red dots at the edges are newly formed stars expelling jets of matter
- Denser regions remain opaque even in infrared
Unprecedented infrared vision
James Webb operates primarily in the infrared spectrum, which reduces the opacity of interstellar dust. Previous Imagenss of Telescópio Hubble, taken in visible light, showed the pillars almost completely dark. The new record makes it possible to identify dozens of young stars that did not appear before.
Scientists use this data to study the initial processes of star formation. As protostars detected launch jets of material that interact with the surrounding medium. Esse phenomenon helps understand how planetary systems similar to Solar develop.
Pillar structure
Pilares from Criação extends several light years into Nebulosa from Águia. The region is known as M16 in the Messier catalog. As columns are sculpted by radiation from nearby massive stars.
The image shows fingers of gas and dust pointing into space. As extremities have a reddish color similar to lava. Essas areas concentrate more intense star formation activity.
Technical details of the capture
The Webb’s NIRCam instrument recorded the scene at wavelengths between 0.6 and 5 micrometers. Essa spectral band partially passes through the dense dust clouds. The result reveals stars that are estimated to be between 100,000 and 300,000 years old.
Importance to astronomy
The data obtained contributes to models of stellar evolution. Pesquisadores identified more than 50 young stars in this image alone. Comparison with previous records demonstrates the superior ability of Webb to observe obscured regions.
Highlighted visual features
The photograph shows contrast between the reddish columns and the blue-green background. Pequenas stars punctuate the entire visual field. As structures resemble a giant hand reaching across the cosmos, as described by astronomers since the first image of Hubble in 1995.
The new version maintains the visual impact of the original discovery, but adds relevant scientific information. The record reinforces the role of James Webb as today’s main space observatory.
Current scientific applications
International teams analyze the spectra of detected stars. Os results help determine mass, temperature and chemical composition of objects. Essas information refines understanding about the formation of rocky and gaseous planets.
