The last supermoon of 2025 reached its peak this Thursday (4), being visible on all inhabited continents. The phenomenon occurred when the full Lua coincided with perigee, the closest point to the Terra in its elliptical orbit. At a distance of approximately 357,628 kilometers, the satellite appeared up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than an average full moon.

Thousands of people in different time zones registered the event between Wednesday night (3) and Friday morning (5), depending on location. Cidades as well as Tóquio, Nova York, Londres, Sydney, Cidade of Cabo and

  • The event marked the fourth and final in the 2025 supermoon calendar.
  • The previous ones took place on September 18th, October 17th and November 15th.
  • The next supermoon will only occur in October 2026.

Visibility in different regions

At Ásia and Oceania, the supermoon was seen on the night of Wednesday (3) to Thursday (4). Em Tóquio, the sunrise of Lua occurred around 4:30 pm local time, with clear skies.

At Europa and África, the peak occurred on Thursday night. Londres recorded the satellite emerging at 16:45 GMT, while Joanesburgo observed it at 19:00 local time.

In Américas, the phenomenon lasted from Thursday night until Friday morning. Nova York saw Lua full at 7:42 pm EST, and Los Angeles at 4:42 pm PST.

Technical characteristics of perigee

The exact distance at the time of perigee was 357,628 kilometers, a measurement recorded at 6:42 pm at Brasília time. Esse value represents a reduction of around 50 thousand kilometers compared to the peak.

The increase in brightness reaches 30% due to the inverse square law of distance. The apparent diameter increases 14% in relation to the annual average.

Astronomers adopt varying criteria to classify supermoons. The most accepted definition considers the event when the full moon occurs less than 361 thousand kilometers from Terra.

Registration in large cities

On Paris, thousands gathered near Torre Eiffel to watch the moonrise. Na China, millions shared images on networks from Xangai and Pequim.

Sydney highlighted the supermoon over Opera House in live broadcasts. Dubai recorded the phenomenon with Lua aligned with Burj Khalifa.

In América of Sul, Buenos Aires and Santiago there were partially cloudy skies, but still allowed good visibility. Rio of Janeiro offered images with Cristo Redentor in the foreground.

Upcoming astronomical events

The year 2026 will have only two confirmed supermoons so far. The first is scheduled for October 3, followed by another in November.

Lunar and solar eclipses will dominate the 2026 astronomical calendar. A total lunar eclipse will be visible in March in parts of Ásia and América.

Global weather conditions

Most of the Norte and Sul hemispheres presented favorable conditions. Regiões and Europa Central faced cloudiness, but still recorded the phenomenon.

In Ásia, the absence of winter monsoons guaranteed clear skies across much of the continent. América of Norte benefited from a cold front that removed clouds.

Impact on tides and scientific observations

The perigee causes spring tides that are more intense by up to 20% compared to normal. Portos coastal areas issued alerts for navigation in some regions.

Observatories such as Europeu of Sul (ESO) and Mauna Kea took the opportunity to test equipment. Institutos spacecraft monitored minute gravitational variations.

The phenomenon ended the cycle of four consecutive supermoons that began in September 2025, becoming one of the richest years in events of this type in the decade.
