December’s full moon, known as Lua Fria, reached peak illumination on December 4, 2025 and marked the end of the year’s supermoon cycle. The phenomenon occurred when Lua was at perigee, the closest point to Terra, resulting in an appearance up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a common full moon.

The astronomical event combined high visibility with the proximity of two active meteor showers in the month. Observadores in several regions were able to record the show without special equipment, especially in Hemisfério Norte.

  • Peak full moon recorded at 23:14 UTC on December 4
  • Distance from Terra at perigee less than 12 hours before the flood phase
  • Third supermoon in a row after events in October and November

Characteristics of December Lua Fria

Lua Fria got its name because it occurs close to the winter solstice in Hemisfério Norte. The high trajectory in the sky prolonged the period of visibility during the night.

At Hemisfério Norte, the moon remained high for prolonged hours due to seasonal tilt. Condições of dry air and low humidity favored the observation of details on the lunar surface.

At Hemisfério Sul, where summer begins, the moon had a low trajectory, similar to the winter sun. The name varies among indigenous cultures, including Lua from Gelo among the Cherokee and Lua Criadora from Inverno among the Abenaki.

The full phase positioned Sol, Terra and Lua aligned, with the illuminated side fully facing the planet. Essa configuration ensured maximum brightness in areas with low light pollution.

Historical context of the Apollo missions

December’s full moon occurred close to important dates in North American lunar exploration. The event coincided with anniversaries of two missions that marked the human presence beyond low Earth orbit.

The Apollo 17 mission marked 53 years since its launch on December 7, 1972. Esse flight represented the last time astronauts set foot on the lunar surface.

Apollo 8 celebrated 57 years since its launch on December 21, 1968. The crew performed the first manned orbit around Lua and recorded the famous Earthrise image.

Preparation for new phase of lunar exploration

Space agencies are advancing in preparations for the return of manned missions to Lua. The Artemis program represents the next step after half a century without human flights beyond Earth orbit.

The Artemis II mission has a launch window scheduled between February and April 2026. Quatro astronauts will carry out a ten-day flight around Lua.

The Artemis III plans a manned landing near the lunar south pole at a later date. Current tests include navigation systems and life support for long durations.

These projects rely on international partnerships and private companies specialized in space technology.

Meteor showers intensify nighttime spectacle

December concentrates two significant meteor showers that benefited from the decreasing lunar illumination after the supermoon. The events offered favorable conditions for observation in locations far from urban centers.

Geminidas peaks between December 13th and 14th with a rate of more than 100 meteors per hour in ideal conditions. The moon in a waning phase of 30% reduces light interference.

Ursidas reaches a maximum on December 21st and 22nd with lunar illumination of just 3%. The phenomenon favors observers at high latitudes of Hemisfério Norte.

Ideal conditions extended observation period

The combination of astronomical factors turned December 2025 into an exceptional month for celestial observation activities. Profissionais and amateurs recorded high-quality images in several locations.

The absence of dense foliage and dry air typical of winter increased contrast and sharpness. Equipamentos basics allowed capturing details of lunar craters and seas.

Rural regions showed better results due to the reduction in artificial light pollution. Aplicativos of astronomy helped identify constellations close to Lua, located in Touro.
