A magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, December 14, 2025, in eastern Sonoma County at Califórnia. The epicenter was located approximately 6 kilometers west of Glen Ellen, southeast of Santa Rosa, at a shallow depth of approximately 2 kilometers. The tremor was recorded shortly before 3:30 pm local time on Pacífico.

Residents of the North Bay region reported tremors that lasted about 10 seconds. The event activated cell phone alerts in wider areas of Baía and São Francisco. Réplicas followed the main tremor, including one of magnitude 3.1 minutes later and another of 3.4 at around 4:04 p.m.

There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries. Autoridades monitor the area to assess possible impacts on structures.

Mainshock details

The Serviço Geológico of the Estados Unidos confirmed the final magnitude of 4.0 after initial revisions that varied between 4.1 and 4.2. The tremor occurred in an area known for moderate seismic activity in Califórnia.

Residents near the epicenter described moderate shaking, with objects falling from shelves in some cases. At greater distances, the shock was felt lightly.

  • Epicenter: 6 km west of Glen Ellen
  • Depth: about 2 km
  • Time: 3:30 pm (Pacífico local time)
  • Reported duration: 10 seconds

Registered replicas

A few minutes after the initial tremor, a magnitude 3.1 aftershock was detected in the same region. Essa replica had similar depth and contributed to additional alerts.

Another aftershock of magnitude 3.4 occurred at 4:04 pm, with an epicenter near Kenwood, about 7 kilometers away. Essas aftershocks are common in seismic sequences and help scientists map faults.

Officials indicate that aftershocks could continue for days. Residentes must remain alert for new tremors.

Reports from residents

Workers at a market in Glen Ellen reported that the tremor passed quickly, causing more confusion than damage. Algumas boxes fell and there were small spills, but nothing serious in the wine department.

In areas like Santa Rosa and Rohnert Park, people described a rocking sensation, similar to being on a boat. Relatos arrived from distant cities, including San Jose, more than 140 kilometers away.

Thousands of people sent reports to the Did You Feel It system? from the USGS. The majority classified the shaking as mild to moderate.

Affected area and range

The tremor was felt across much of North Bay, including Napa and Petaluma. Alertas emergency messages were sent to cell phones in San Francisco and other cities in Baía.

Despite the range, intensity decreased with distance. Próximo to the epicenter, shaking was moderate, while at more distant points it was light.

  • Cities with strong reports: Glen Ellen, Kenwood, Santa Rosa
  • Cities with light shaking: San Francisco, San Jose, Berkeley
  • No tsunami warnings: event occurred on dry land

Seismic activity in the region

Sonoma County is located in an area of active faults in Califórnia, close to the San Andreas zone. Tremores of similar magnitude occur periodically without causing extensive damage.

Experts highlight that events like this serve as a reminder to prepare. Califórnia has early warning systems that worked in this case.

There is no evidence that the tremor is a precursor to a larger shock. Monitoramento continues in real time.

Recommended preparation

Authorities advise checking structures after tremors. Loose Itens must be secured to prevent falling into replicas.

Emergency kits include water, food and flashlights. Prática from “Drop, Cover and Hold On” is essential during shaking.

  • Check gas leaks
  • Inspect electrical wiring
  • Keep radio for updates
  • Plan evacuation routes

Continuous monitoring

The USGS maintains a page dedicated to the event with real-time updates. Milhares of reports help refine intensity maps.

Replica sequences generally decrease over time. Probabilidade of major shock remains low, around 5% according to general data.

Residents can download seismic alert apps. Sistemas like MyShake send notifications seconds before shaking.

Califórnia records thousands of tremors annually, most of them imperceptible. Eventos of magnitude 4.0 are felt but rarely cause serious damage in prepared areas.

This occurrence reinforces the importance of resistant constructions. Normas seismic data in the state have been rigorous since past decades.

Local geological context

The Sonoma region is part of the Baía fault system. Falhas and Rodgers Creek are nearby and constantly monitored.

Shallow tremors like this propagate shaking with more intensity. Profundidade rasa explains broad accounts.

Studies indicate that the area sustains moderate tremors regularly. Preparação mitigates risks in larger events.

Network reports

Residents shared experiences on online platforms shortly after the quake. Vídeos show objects swinging from houses.

Automatic alerts have helped many protect themselves. Tempo warning ranged from seconds to minutes depending on distance.

There were no interruptions to essential services. Aeroportos and highways operated normally.

Official updates

Local authorities recorded no emergency calls related to damage. Equipes inspection remains on alert.

The event did not affect wineries in the region, known worldwide. Funcionários reported rapid cleanup of minor incidents.

Monitoring continues for additional replicas. Público can consult official websites for interactive maps.
