Organização Mundial of Saúde identified a significant increase in the circulation of influenza viruses in several regions of the world since October 2025. The entity issued a warning for the season that extends until the beginning of 2026, coinciding with winter in Hemisfério Norte.

Global surveillance data shows that influenza activity remains within generally expected seasonal patterns. However, specific regions have recorded an earlier onset and higher intensity of cases, which may increase pressure on health services. The K variant, also known as J.2.4.1, presents genetic changes that facilitate its spread, although there is no evidence of greater clinical severity so far.

Experts highlight that influenza A (H3N2) historically causes more relevant impacts on vulnerable groups during seasons dominated by this subtype. Annual vaccination continues to be recommended as the main protective measure.

Spread of the K variant around the world

The K variant began to be detected more frequently from August 2025 in samples sequenced in several countries. Essa rapid expansion occurred in parallel with the advance of winter in Hemisfério Norte, the traditional peak period for respiratory infections.

In Europa, authorities recorded the flu season starting earlier than usual, with a predominance of H3N2 in positive tests both in primary care and in hospitals. Países as well as Reino Unido and França observed an early increase in transmission indicators.

  • Increase in positivity of tests for influenza A(H3N2)
  • Predominance in genetic sequencing in the western region of Pacífico
  • Heterogeneous circulation in tropical areas with continuous activity throughout the year

In América of Sul, the variant does not yet have sustained circulation, but the increase in international travel increases the probability of introduction in the coming months.

Genetic and clinical characteristics

The K subclade represents a natural evolution of the influenza A virus, known for frequent mutations that alter its structure. Essas changes affect hemagglutinin, the protein responsible for the virus entering cells, influencing transmission and immune response.

Current epidemiological data do not indicate an increase in the severity of cases associated with the K variant compared to other branches of H3N2. Temporadas dominated by this subtype, however, they tend to record a higher number of hospitalizations, especially among the elderly and people with comorbidities.

Global monitoring is carried out by a network coordinated by the WHO, which brings together institutions in more than 130 countries to analyze clinical and genetic samples. Essa framework allows you to identify expansion patterns and assess risks in real time.

Risk groups and possible complications

Elderly people over 60 years of age constitute the main vulnerable group, with a high risk of developing respiratory failure and needing hospitalization. Pessoas with chronic conditions, such as heart or lung disease, also face a greater likelihood of serious conditions.

Pregnant women and young children deserve special attention, as they may develop complications such as premature birth or secondary infections. Profissionais healthcare professionals are exposed to both the acquisition and transmission of the virus in hospital environments.

Most infected people recover within a week without specific medical intervention. Antivirais are indicated for high-risk cases, helping to reduce the duration and intensity of symptoms when administered early.

Effectiveness of current vaccination

Preliminary estimates show that the 2025-2026 seasonal vaccine maintains protection against hospitalizations, even with genetic differences in relation to the K subclade. In children and adolescents, effectiveness reaches around 70% to 75% for preventing serious illnesses.

In adults, the percentages vary between 30% and 40%, depending on the region and age group analyzed. Immunization offers additional benefit by reducing community transmission and protecting against other circulating strains.

At

Recommended surveillance measures

Health authorities must intensify epidemiological and virological monitoring to detect unusual patterns early. Strengthening laboratories for genetic sequencing helps in the rapid identification of viral changes.

Health systems need to prepare capacity for increased demand for respiratory care. Isso includes stock of antivirals and planning for bed occupancy in intensive care units.

  • Frequent hand hygiene
  • Respiratory etiquette when coughing or sneezing
  • Use of a mask indoors when symptomatic
  • Avoid close contact with vulnerable people during symptoms

Preparation for Hemisfério Sul

In América of Sul, flu season typically occurs between June and August. With the global expansion of the K variant, there is a possibility of an earlier onset in 2026, requiring early surveillance.

Countries in the region have already registered circulation of H3N2, although without a sustained predominance of subclade K so far. The increase in international mobility during the end of year holidays increases the import risk.

Experts recommend maintaining vaccine stocks and campaigns targeting priority groups as soon as the formula for Hemisfério Sul is available.

Continuous global monitoring

The international influenza surveillance network collects clinical, epidemiological and genetic data throughout the year. Bases like GISAID facilitate rapid sharing of viral sequences between countries.

This system allows projections for annual vaccination composition and timely alerts on relevant developments. The WHO coordinates periodic reviews to adjust recommendations as new patterns emerge.

Collaboration between more than 160 institutions ensures a coordinated response to seasonal respiratory threats.
