BYD launches in the Japão the Sea Lion 6, its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV), with a starting price of 3,982,000 yen (about 26,700 dollars). The mid-size SUV model offers an electric range of 100 km and a combined total of up to 1,200 km in the front-wheel drive version. Sales began in December 2025, with deliveries scheduled for the end of January 2026 in FWD configuration and March in AWD. The vehicle arrives to compete directly with local hybrid SUVs and PHEVs, standing out for its efficiency and complete equipment.
The Sea Lion 6 marks BYD’s expansion beyond 100% electric vehicles into the Japão, where the brand already sells four BEVs. The Chinese manufacturer is betting on the fourth generation DM-i system, which combines a combustion engine with high thermal efficiency and an 18.3 kWh battery. Esse set allows daily trips in electric mode only and long trips without worrying about frequent recharging.
The FWD version prioritizes fuel economy, while the AWD, which arrives in 2026, adds a rear engine and turbo for acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds. The minimum turning radius of 5.55 m facilitates maneuvering in urban areas. The vehicle measures 4,775 mm in length and offers ample interior space for families.
Equipment and safety stand out in the package
The Sea Lion 6 is equipped with a 15.6-inch rotating central screen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Infinity sound system has 10 speakers, and the interior includes synthetic leather seats with electrical adjustments, heating and ventilation. Há panoramic sunroof with electric shutter and trunk with automatic activation.
The Level 2 Driver Assistance Package includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring. Sete airbags protect the occupants, and the battery warranty is eight years or 160,000 km. The vehicle’s general warranty is six years or 150,000 km.
Price and range comparison with rivals
The base price of the Sea Lion 6 is below 4 million yen, which makes it more affordable than competitors like the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which starts at 5.26 million yen. Mesmo with government subsidies, the Outlander is around 4.68 million yen in the basic version.
The Toyota RAV4 PHEV starts at 5.66 million yen, dropping to around 5.06 million with incentives. The Sea Lion 6 offers similar electric autonomy, but with an advantage in price and combined consumption. BYD’s AWD version promises performance close to that of Japanese rivals.
BYD tweaked the model for the Japanese market, with improvements to rear comfort and reduced vibrations. The brand registered more than 300 pre-orders before the official launch, indicating initial interest. The vehicle also competes with non-plug-in hybrids, such as the Nissan X-Trail e-Power and the Honda ZR-V Hybrid, which cost around 4 million yen.
Hybrid technology and efficiency of the Sea Lion 6
The DM-i system allows operation in series or parallel mode, optimizing the use of the combustion engine. Thermal efficiency reaches 43%, and OTA updates improve performance over time. Combined consumption reaches 22.4 km/l in the FWD version.
BYD’s Blade battery ensures safety and durability. DC fast charging supports up to 18 kW, and AC reaches 6.6 kW. Esses features meet Japanese preferences for efficiency and low emissions in urban commuting.
The Sea Lion 6 reinforces BYD’s strategy of offering hybrid options in the Japão, where charging infrastructure is still limited. The brand plans to launch more PHEV models by 2027, expanding its presence in the local market.
