Toyota is preparing a significant update for the Corolla Cross, scheduled for launch in the 2027 model, which will hit the market in 2026. The automaker seeks not only to modernize the look, but also to improve performance and efficiency, focusing on new engine options and a sportier aesthetic package.

The main novelty lies in the introduction of a flex-fuel plug-in hybrid (PHEV) engine, which promises a combined power of up to 223 horsepower. Esta configuration places the Corolla Cross at the forefront of the brand’s electrification, establishing it as one of the first vehicles in the country to offer such technology on a large scale. The expectation is that this new powertrain will contribute to the reduction of emissions and superior performance, meeting the growing demands for sustainability and performance.

In addition to the advanced engine, the model will receive aesthetic improvements in line with the global Corolla Cross line, as well as specific improvements for the GR-Sport version. Tais modifications aim to strengthen the brand’s leadership in terms of efficiency, performance and visual appeal in the dynamic national automotive scene, seeking to attract an audience that values both innovation and sporty style.

New flex plug-in hybrid system

The Corolla Cross 2027 will feature an updated plug-in hybrid system, representing a considerable evolution compared to the current 1.8-liter engine, which delivers 122 horsepower. The new mechanical package combines a 152 hp 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine with a 163 hp electric motor, resulting in a combined power of 223 hp. Esta engine is perfectly suited for urban use, providing agility and economy.

This configuration promises a significant reduction in polluting gas emissions during urban driving, in addition to an extended electric range. Testes preliminary data indicated a maximum range of 70 km in electric mode on a single charge and an average consumption of 20 km/liter in the combined cycle, surpassing the 16 km/liter of the previous version. The latest generation CVT transmission ensures a smooth transition between engines, allowing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 8 seconds.

Renewed exterior design and GR-Sport package

Changes to the exterior of the Corolla Cross 2027 include the adoption of full LED headlights with a new internal pattern, aligning the SUV with the design language already present in other models of the brand. The front grille will also be wider and receive a high-gloss finish, while the bumper will be redesigned to accentuate sportiness in the urban environment.

At the rear, new light bars with a redesigned internal design and a redesigned bumper will be incorporated, giving a touch of sophistication and greater visual robustness to the whole. Essas modifications aim not only to modernize the vehicle’s aesthetics, but also to improve its aerodynamics and presence on the streets.

The GR-Sport version, in particular, will feature a more aggressive front bumper, reminiscent of the “GR Corolla” design, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Essas features were designed for a more sporty and imposing look, differentiating it from other variants in the line.

Optimization for the market and manufacturing investment

Toyota plans to invest 20 billion reais in the Sorocaba factory by 2027, with a focus on localizing production and manufacturing of PHEV components. Esta initiative, in partnership with national suppliers, aims to optimize production costs by up to 10%, making PHEV models more accessible to consumers.

The Corolla Cross already accounts for 40% of the brand’s hybrid vehicle sales in the country and is expected to strengthen its leadership in this segment with an annual growth rate of 25%. Research into the durability of battery components is ongoing, with particular attention to service life and performance in high-speed driving conditions.

Engine options and estimated values

The 2027 Corolla Cross lineup will maintain the 169 horsepower 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine for entry-level versions, such as XR and XRE, combined with a CVT transmission that simulates 10 gears. Esta option continues to meet the demand of consumers seeking a balance between cost and efficiency, offering a robust and reliable alternative.

Meanwhile, the 1.8-liter conventional hybrid version is due for a review and could be replaced by the new 2.0 PHEV, potentially unifying the brand’s electrified offering. The arrival of more competitively priced PHEV models promises to intensify electrification in this segment, and Corolla Cross 2027 is positioned to capitalize on this, leveraging Toyota’s strong technical support structure with more than 200 trained dealers.

  • PHEV version: 223 hp, electric range of 70 km, full recharge in 2.5 hours.
  • Naturally aspirated version: 169 HP, urban consumption of 12 km/l.
  • GR-Sport version: Suspensão lowered by 10 mm, performance brakes to improve handling.
  • Enhanced security and interior comfort

Estimated launch prices are R$180,000 for the naturally aspirated version and up to R$250,000 for the top-of-the-line PHEV model. Safety improvements include an advanced active safety system and an updated autonomous braking system, which will be standard on all versions of the model.

The TNGA-C platform brings structural improvements, resulting in a 30% increase in torsional rigidity and a 15% reduction in internal noise. Essas improvements contribute to a safer and more stable driving experience, raising the SUV’s quality standard, providing greater comfort for occupants on different types of terrain and traffic situations.

    Onboard connectivity and versatility

The interior of the Corolla Cross 2027 will feature a horizontal design, incorporating new finishes for the console and doors, creating a more modern and sophisticated environment. A 15W wireless charger for smartphones will be integrated into the center console, and the Toyota Play multimedia center will include compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ensuring advanced connectivity and a complete technological experience for users, facilitating access to navigation and entertainment.

Exclusive details of the GR-Sport version

The GR-Sport version of the Corolla Cross will feature a more robust front bumper, which mimics the design of the GR Corolla sports car. The 18-inch alloy wheels, equipped with 225/50R18 tires, are designed to provide greater grip in curves and a more dynamic driving experience, with adjustments to the suspension and steering that aim to deliver a more direct and sporty response to the driver.
