Honda released on social media the audio of its new 850cc V4 engine, destined for the 2027 MotoGP season. Essa revelation took place on December 22, 2025, with a short video accompanied by the caption that highlighted the “first sound of a new era”. The Japanese manufacturer follows in the footsteps of KTM, which had already shared similar content about its prototype.
Technical changes for 2027 include a reduction in displacement from 1000cc to 850cc, as well as tighter aerodynamic restrictions and a ban on suspension height adjustment devices. Esses adjustments aim to increase safety, reduce maximum speeds and promote greater sustainability in the championship. Honda carried out recent private testing at Sepang, at Malásia, where the new engine was put on track for the first time, although weather conditions limited the work.
The HRC development team took advantage of remaining concessions to advance the prototype, which is expected to be named RC214V. Pilotos testing as Aleix Espargaró and Takaaki Nakagami actively participate in the process, focusing on adaptations for the new Pirelli tires, which will replace the Michelin from 2027.
Honda preparations for transition
The Honda left the most restrictive concession group at the end of 2025, moving to the Grupo C in 2026. The Italian driver highlighted that the extensive 22-race calendar makes the restriction an advantage in terms of workload.
In 2026, the last year of 1000cc engines, Honda will freeze developments to prioritize the new era. Testes and Sepang included the 850cc engine on a conventional basis, with a reduced aerodynamic package. Nakagami tested Pirelli compounds for wet and dry surfaces, an area still little explored by rivals.
Major regulatory changes
The 2027 rules reduce the displacement to 850cc and the maximum cylinder diameter from 81mm to 75mm. Essas changes maintain four-cylinder and four-stroke engines, but limit performance for greater speed control.
- Total ban on height adjustment devices, including holeshot.
- Significant reduction in aerodynamic elements, with homologation and limited updates.
- Smaller fuel tank and minimum bike weight adjusted to 153kg.
- Introduction of 100% sustainable fuel of non-fossil origin.

Development of prototypes
Honda named the new model RC214V, following the naming tradition that reflects technical eras. The current prototype, RC213V, remains in use until 2026. Private Testes on circuits like Sepang allow HRC to accumulate data before collective sessions with Pirelli in 2026.
Aleix Espargaró focuses efforts on the 2026 model, while Nakagami leads the 2027 project initially. The Japanese manufacturer seeks to regain competitiveness after challenging seasons, taking advantage of recent momentum to enter the new regulations strongly.
Competitors’ responses
KTM started track testing with its 850cc engine at Jerez, with Pol Espargaró. Outras brands, such as Ducati, Aprilia and Yamaha, are advancing in parallel, but without similar public revelations so far.
- Ducati maintains current dominance, but faces technical reset.
- Aprilia and KTM tested Pirelli compounds on Misano.
- Yamaha explores V4 configurations in in-house development.
Tests affected by weather
The tests in Sepang suffered from intense rain, limiting representative running-in of the new engine. Nakagami completed laps with reduced configuration, prioritizing Pirelli tire evaluation. HRC plans additional sessions in 2026 to compensate.
The team will alternate tests between 2026 and 2027 models at events organized by Pirelli. Dois collective tests are planned for next year, with the possible inclusion of regular pilots.
Concessions and future planning
All manufacturers start 2027 at Rank B of concessions, with reevaluation in the middle of the season. Novos entrants receive maximum benefits. Honda uses remaining 2025 benefits to accelerate the 2027 program.
Luca Marini and Joan Mir represent the official team, while tests are supported by experienced drivers. The focus balances immediate improvement with long-term preparation for technical revolution.
New-age technical perspectives
The 850cc engine promises a distinct sound, as shown in the audio released by Honda. Engenheiros seek a balance between reduced power and greater reliability. The transition to Pirelli adds an important variable in chassis and suspension development.
Manufacturers adapt designs for restricted aerodynamics, prioritizing pure mechanics. MotoGP aims for more competitive races, with greater emphasis on the skill of the riders.
