Hyundai confirmed plans for a complete reformulation of one of its main products in the national market. The next generation of the HB20 is scheduled to be launched in 2026, as a 2027 model, and promises to redefine the standards of the compact hatchback segment with a design strongly inspired by the European i20 model and a significant increase in internal space.

This new phase of the vehicle aims to directly meet the main demands of consumers, who are looking for more comfort, on-board technology and a look in line with global automotive design trends. The South Korean automaker’s strategy is clear: strengthen the competitiveness of the HB20 to compete for sales leadership in one of the most competitive categories in the country.

Currently, the model occupies third place in the registration ranking, but the expectation is that innovations will boost it. Informações behind-the-scenes and prototype analyzes indicate that, in addition to the renewed look, the focus on a more spacious cabin and the maintenance of the efficient turbo engine will be the pillars for attracting new customers and regaining the top of the segment.

Design inspired by the i20 and expanded dimensions

The visual identity of the future Hyundai HB20 2027 will be one of its biggest attractions, abandoning the current lines to adopt a more sophisticated and sporty aesthetic, based on the successful i20. The prototypes spotted in tests reveal a completely redesigned front, with sharper headlights and LED technology, integrated into a wider and more imposing front grille, which follows the brand’s global design language. The sides will gain more pronounced and dynamic creases, giving the hatch a more robust and modern appearance, while the rear will receive new lights and a redesigned bumper to complement the whole.

To resolve one of the main criticisms of the current generation, the new HB20 will grow in size. The total length should exceed 4,050 millimeters, and the wheelbase will be increased to around 2,550 millimeters. Esse structural increase will directly translate into more comfort for the occupants, especially in the rear seat, which will offer more leg and shoulder space, making the vehicle more suitable for families and longer trips, an important differentiator compared to its direct competitors.

Renovated interior with cutting-edge technology and more comfort

The cabin of the HB20 2027 will undergo a true revolution, with a focus on elevating the perception of quality and the onboard experience. The Hyundai will invest in superior finishing materials, with soft-touch surfaces and more precise fits, bringing the hatch closer to higher categories. The big star of the interior will be a new dashboard, which will house a unified panoramic screen, integrating the fully digital instrument panel and the infotainment system. Essa solution, in addition to being modern, improves ergonomics and the visualization of information by the driver. Connectivity will be enhanced with wireless support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, eliminating the need for cables. Nas top-of-the-line versions, the safety package will be reinforced with advanced driving assistants, such as an autonomous emergency braking system, blind spot warning and lane keeping assistant, positioning the HB20 as one of the references in technology and safety in the segment.

Efficient motorization and options for all profiles

Hyundai chose to maintain the range of engines already consolidated and approved by the public, guaranteeing reliability and efficiency. The entry-level versions of the new HB20 will continue to be equipped with the three-cylinder aspirated 1.0 Kappa flex engine.

This engine, known for its robustness and low maintenance cost, delivers up to 80 horsepower and 10.2 kgfm of torque, being coupled to a five-speed manual transmission, ideal for urban use.

For those looking for superior performance, the more expensive configurations will maintain the 1.0 TGDI turbo flex engine, also with three cylinders. With direct fuel injection, it develops up to 120 horsepower and 17.5 kgfm of torque, associated with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Hyundai strategy and the future of HB20S

The arrival of the new generation of the hatch marks an important strategic change in the Hyundai portfolio in the country. The automaker plans to discontinue production of the sedan body, the HB20S.

This decision aims to make room on its assembly line for the introduction of a new compact SUV, which will be positioned below the Creta, competing in a high volume and growing demand segment.

The movement reflects the clear consumer preference for sports utility vehicles, a category that has dominated sales in recent years and offers more attractive profit margins for manufacturers.

With the end of the sedan, Hyundai will focus all its efforts on strengthening the image and sales of the HB20 hatch, ensuring that it has all the necessary attributes to be a market leader in its own right.

What to expect from the new trunk and practicality

One of the points that will receive special attention in the new generation is the trunk capacity. The current compartment, with 300 liters, is already considered adequate, but the projection is that the HB20 2027 will offer a higher volume, estimated at at least 320 liters.

This expansion will position the model more advantageously in relation to direct competitors such as the Chevrolet Onix and the Volkswagen Polo, making it an even more practical option for daily and family use.

Launch and market expectations

With the launch scheduled for mid-2026, Hyundai is expected to begin official advertising of the new HB20 in the coming months, with the release of teasers and more technical details. The transition between generations is already beginning to be felt in the dealership network, with promotions for current model units, a common strategy to renew stocks before the arrival of a major update.

Tough competition in the compact hatchback segment

The new HB20 will reach an extremely competitive market. In 2025, leadership in the compact hatchback segment will be contested mainly by the Volkswagen Polo and the Fiat Argo. The Polo ended the first months of the year in the lead, with 45,725 registered units, valued for its drivability and robust mechanical package. The Argo comes close behind, with 37,234 units, standing out for its design and cost-benefit.

The HB20, with 29,958 units sold until May, showed strength and significant growth in the last month. Hyundai is betting that improvements in design, space, technology and the maintenance of efficient engines will be crucial to not only reduce this difference, but to put the model back in direct contention for the top spot on the sales podium.
