The pressure of the Estados Unidos on the Venezuelan government of Nicolás Maduro intensified significantly with the increase in the reward for information leading to his capture to 50 million dollars. Paralelamente, Washington seized more than 700 million dollars in assets allegedly linked to the Chavista leader.

Still in August 2025, a military force made up of around 4 thousand soldiers, including marines and members of Força Aérea, was deployed to Caribe. The declared objective of the operation is to combat drug trafficking and dismantle cartels that, according to American authorities, are associated with the Maduro regime.

This strategy reflects Washington’s stance in classifying the Venezuelan government as a threat to national security, accusing it of leading the Cartel of Soles and of collaborating with organizations such as the Tren of Aragua and the Cartel of Sinaloa. The Venezuela, in turn, reacted by mobilizing militiamen in defense of its sovereignty.

Reward increase by Nicolás Maduro

The increase in the reward from 25 million to 50 million dollars, announced on August 7, 2025, marks a historic moment in American foreign policy, even surpassing the offer for Osama bin Laden after the September 11 attacks. The measure aims to put pressure on the Venezuelan president, accused of being one of the biggest drug traffickers in the world and of leading an organized crime scheme that has corrupted the country’s institutions. Este increase in supply demonstrates Washington’s determination to hold Maduro responsible for narco-terrorism and drug trafficking crimes, intensifying pressure on the regime.

Details of charges and confiscated assets

Attorney General Pam Bondi highlighted that Agência from Repressão to Drogas (DEA) seized 30 tons of cocaine linked to the regime, with 7 tons directly attributed to Maduro. Essas substances, often mixed with fentanyl, are identified as a direct threat to public health in Estados Unidos, reinforcing the seriousness of the accusations.

Departamento of Justiça also confiscated more than $700 million in assets, including private jets, luxury vehicles and miscellaneous properties. Entre the seized assets are two multimillion-dollar planes, mansions in Flórida and in República Dominicana, a horse farm and jewelry. The operation also targeted figures such as Diosdado Cabello and Vladimir Padrino, with rewards of 25 million and 15 million dollars, respectively, aiming to dismantle the Cartel of the Soles, classified as a terrorist organization.

– Principais charges against Maduro: narco-terrorism, conspiracy to commit drug trafficking and collaboration with international cartels.
– Bens seized: two private jets, nine vehicles, mansions, horse farm, jewelry and money.
– Quantidade of drugs: 30 tons of cocaine, with 7 tons directly linked to Maduro.

Military movement in the Caribbean in 2025

On August 18, 2025, the American administration authorized the sending of three destroyers — USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham and USS Sampson — to the south of Caribe, close to the Venezuelan coast. Esta operation, which involves around 4 thousand soldiers, is described as a direct response to drug cartels classified as global terrorist organizations, with the aim of intensifying the fight against drug trafficking in the region.

The military mobilization, which lasted around 36 hours, signals an escalation in tensions between the two countries. Ela rekindles memories of American interventions in América Latina, such as the invasion of Panamá in 1989 to capture Manuel Noriega, although the American government has not confirmed the exact location of the ships.

Washington’s stance and political scenario

Casa Branca’s spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, stated that the American president is prepared to use “all force” against the Maduro regime, which Washington does not recognize as legitimate. The American administration considers Edmundo González the winner of the 2024 elections, intensifying accusations against the Venezuelan government and pointing to it as a criminal organization, in a foreign policy that harks back to the Doutrina Monroe of the 19th century.

Venezuelan response and militia mobilization

In reaction to American actions, Nicolás Maduro announced, on August 19, 2025, the mobilization of 4.5 million Chavista militiamen throughout Venezuelan territory. In a televised speech, the president ordered the activation of peasant and worker militias, highlighting the need to defend the country’s “sovereignty and peace” against what he considers external “threats”.

The minister of Defesa, Vladimir Padrino López, classified the American accusations as “silly” and “fanciful”, saying that the rewards violate international law. Ele reinforced the nation’s defense posture and the armed forces’ loyalty to the regime.

Chancellor Yván Gil was even more emphatic, calling the 50 million dollar reward “pathetic” and “political propaganda”, reiterating his denial of any involvement with drug trafficking. The mobilization reflects Maduro’s strategy of consolidating domestic support amid external pressure, while the economic and political crisis in the country intensifies.

– Mobilização: 4.5 million armed and prepared militiamen.
– Objetivo: protect the territory against external threats and defend sovereignty.
– Declaração: Maduro asked for “rifles and missiles” for the working and peasant class.
– International Apoio: Venezuela counts on Rússia, China and Irã as strategic allies.

History of narcoterrorism allegations

The accusations made by Estados Unidos against Maduro are not recent. Desde 2020, The current administration has intensified the pressure, doubling the value and reinforcing the narrative that Maduro leads the Cartel of the Soles, a criminal organization that, according to the Departamento of the Tesouro, has corrupted Venezuelan institutions.

The re-election of Maduro in July 2024, considered fraudulent by Washington and other countries, increased Venezuela’s diplomatic isolation. The opposition, led by figures such as Edmundo González and Maria Corina Machado, faces repression, with arrests and exiles, although Maduro maintains control with the support of international allies and a loyal military base.

– Início of accusations: 2020, with allegations of narcoterrorism.
– Eleição contested: July 2024, with victory questioned by international observers.
– Oposição: Edmundo González is recognized by the USA as the legitimate president.
– Sanções: oil embargo and other economic measures imposed since 2019.

Regional tension and the current scenario

The American military mobilization in Caribe and the Venezuelan response with armed militias raise the risk of a direct confrontation in the region. The presence of destroyers and the aggressive rhetoric on both sides rekindle fears of a military intervention, similar to that which occurred against Noriega in Panamá, increasing the volatility of the geopolitical scenario.

Analysts point out that the 50 million dollar reward has a more symbolic character, aiming to create internal tension and distrust in the circle close to Maduro. The strategy seeks to destabilize the regime without necessarily implying immediate military action.

Venezuela, in turn, reinforces its narrative of resistance against what it calls American “imperialism”, seeking political and economic support from allies such as Rússia, China and Irã. Essa international alliance is crucial for maintaining the regime amid external pressure.

The internal economic crisis, with galloping inflation and shortages of basic goods, worsens the situation, testing the resilience of the Chavista government. The combination of internal and external factors keeps the country in a state of continuous instability.
