The Toyota is preparing one of the most significant updates for the Brazilian automotive market with the new generation of the Corolla Cross. Scheduled to be launched in the 2026 and 2027 cycle, the medium SUV will not only receive a completely renewed design, but will also incorporate a plug-in hybrid engine (PHEV), a first for the model in the country.

The main strategic news is the confirmation of national production of the vehicle. The Toyota industrial complex in Sorocaba, São Paulo, will be responsible for assembling the new SUV, reinforcing the Japanese automaker’s commitment to electrification and technology development in the Brasil.

This move positions the Corolla Cross even more competitively in the fierce medium SUV segment. The introduction of locally manufactured PHEV technology represents a crucial step towards the popularization of more efficient vehicles with lower polluting emissions in the national market.

Performance and the new plug-in hybrid powertrain

The big technical highlight of the new generation will be the plug-in hybrid system. Combinando a combustion engine with a more powerful electric motor and a larger capacity battery, the set will deliver a combined power of 223 horsepower, a significant jump compared to the 122 horsepower of the current hybrid model.

This increase in power will be directly reflected in the SUV’s performance. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is designed to be achieved in approximately 8 seconds, providing notably greater agility and making driving more dynamic both in the city and on the highway.

In addition to the PHEV version, the Toyota must maintain other engine options to meet different consumer profiles. Versões updated 2.0-liter aspirated engine and conventional hybrid system, with improvements in efficiency and power, are also expected in the 2027 line.

The transmission will continue to be the e-CVT type, which simulates gears, but optimized to manage the greater power of the new system. The focus will be on maintaining the model’s characteristic smoothness, while offering more immediate responses when the driver demands more performance from the vehicle.

Electric range and fuel consumption

With plug-in technology, the Corolla Cross 2027 will be able to run in pure electric mode for up to 70 kilometers on a full charge. Essa autonomy is enough to cover most daily urban journeys, such as going to work, taking the children to school or shopping, without consuming a single drop of gasoline.

When the battery charge is exhausted, the vehicle operates as a conventional hybrid, switching between the combustion engine and the electric engine to maximize efficiency. Nesse mode, projected fuel consumption is approximately 16 km/l, an excellent number for an SUV with more than 220 horsepower.

Recharging the battery will be another point of convenience. Using a wall charger (wallbox) or a 220V industrial socket, the time to reach 80% charge will be around two and a half hours, allowing the owner to easily recharge the vehicle overnight or during short stops.

Production in Sorocaba and strengthening the industry

The decision to produce the new Corolla Cross PHEV in Sorocaba is a milestone for the Brazilian automotive industry and for Toyota. Esse movement solidifies the São Paulo plant as a hub for the development and production of electrification technologies at América Latina. The investment not only guarantees the modernization of assembly lines, but also stimulates the entire local supply chain, with the potential nationalization of components for hybrid systems, generating qualified jobs and promoting the regional economy.

Strategically, local manufacturing allows Toyota to have greater control over costs and logistics, making the final price of the plug-in hybrid SUV more competitive in the Brazilian market. Isso eliminates dependence on exchange rate fluctuations and import taxes, which make vehicles with this technology brought from abroad more expensive. With this, the automaker will be able to offer a high-technology product with an aggressive price positioning compared to its main direct competitors.

Renewed design and more technology on board

The look of the Corolla Cross 2027 will undergo a profound transformation, aligning with the latest global design language of the Toyota. The front will be completely redesigned, adopting sharper full LED headlights and a new shaped front grille, giving the SUV a more modern and aggressive appearance. The front and rear bumpers will also be updated, and new alloy wheels will complement the robust and elegant look. Inside, the technological revolution will be evident, with the introduction of a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel and a new floating multimedia center with a 10-inch screen, compatible with Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay. The interior finish will be improved with higher quality materials, and features such as an induction cell phone charger and a more complete active safety package should equip the top-of-the-line versions, while the practical 440-liter trunk will be maintained.

GR-Sport version with dynamic appeal

For consumers looking for a sportier driving experience, the Toyota will continue to offer the GR-Sport version. The Este model will be distinguished by an exclusive design, with more aggressive bumpers, 18-inch wheels with a diamond finish and emblems of the Gazoo Racing division.

In addition to the look, the GR-Sport variant will receive a specific suspension calibration. With a 10 mm lower ground clearance and firmer shock absorbers, the model will offer more precise and stable handling in curves, guaranteeing superior dynamic behavior without excessively sacrificing comfort.

Positioning against competitors

The new generation of the Corolla Cross will arrive to intensify the competition in the medium SUV segment, which is currently led by the Jeep Compass and has strong competitors such as the Volkswagen Taos and the GWM Haval H6.

The main competitive advantage of the Toyota model will be the offering of plug-in hybrid technology with national production. Essa feature positions it as a unique option, which combines the efficiency of an electric car for daily use with the autonomy of a combustion vehicle for long trips, a difference that most of its direct rivals do not yet have in the Brazilian market.

Prices and market expectations

Although official prices will only be released closer to launch, the expectation is that the new generation of the Toyota Corolla Cross will arrive with adjusted prices to reflect technological innovations and the new design. The entry-level and intermediate versions should maintain competitiveness, while the unprecedented plug-in hybrid version will be positioned as the top-of-the-line option, targeting models such as the Jeep Compass 4xe and the GWM Haval H6 PHEV.
