An unprecedented and highly functional version of the Dacia Duster has just been presented to the European market, transformed into a single-cab pickup truck. The project is a collaboration with the Romanian manufacturer Romturingia, known for its specialization in conversions, which used the latest generation of the SUV as the basis for creation. The vehicle maintains the original structure and wheelbase, but is repositioned to serve a very specific market niche, focused on work and versatility.

The new Duster pickup arrives equipped with modern electrified engines, including semi-hybrid and fully hybrid options, in addition to the coveted 4×4 traction. The proposal aims to mainly serve companies, fleet owners and self-employed professionals who need an agile vehicle to transport light loads in urban and rural environments. Embora the bucket has compact dimensions, onboard technology and energy efficiency consolidate it as a practical and economical solution to the continent’s demands.

While the customized novelty moves the European scene, the strategy from Renault to América from Sul follows a different and more ambitious path. The automaker plans to launch the Niagara pickup truck, a larger project developed on a new platform to compete directly in a higher volume segment, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to more robust products aligned with local consumer preferences.

A transformation focused on functionality

The conversion of the Duster into a pickup is a tradition of the Romturingia, which has already carried out adaptations in previous generations of the SUV. Esta is the first time that the new platform model, known for its pragmatic approach and modern design, has undergone this modification. The strategic decision not to lengthen the chassis or wheelbase simplifies the production process and helps contain costs, perfectly aligning with the Dacia’s excellent value for money philosophy.

This engineering choice, however, directly impacts the dimensions of the bed, which becomes more compact compared to traditional chassis pickups. The focus of the project is not to compete in terms of cargo volume, but rather to offer an agile, economical and efficient work tool, ideal for tasks that do not require large space, but rather versatility and low operating costs.

With a declared payload capacity of up to 430 kg, the Duster pickup is perfectly suited for transporting tools, small equipment or goods in urban and rural deliveries. The bucket, despite its modest dimensions, is equipped with a durable protective coating and lashing points, ensuring the safety of transported items during the journey.

The target audience is well defined: small companies, service providers and fleet owners looking for a vehicle with lower operating costs than a compact van and greater flexibility. The ability to tackle difficult-to-access terrain, thanks to all-wheel drive, becomes a crucial differentiator for professionals working in rural areas or on construction sites.

Compact design and bucket details

Visually, the Duster pickup fully preserves the SUV identity at the front. The model features the same “Y”-shaped tapered LED headlights and robust grille that characterize the new design language of the Dacia. The main and most obvious changes are concentrated in the B (central) column, where the rear roof and side windows were removed to make way for an open cargo bed, completely transforming the vehicle’s profile.

The engineering solution adopted by Romturingia includes the installation of a new rear panel for the cabin, which features porthole windows to maintain visibility and protect the occupants. The trunk lid has a conventional opening and the cargo compartment measures 1.05 meters long by 1 meter wide. Essas dimensions limit its use for larger volumes, but are sufficient for the intended market niche.

Despite the appearance that may seem unusual at first glance, the conversion’s finish is of high quality, seeking to integrate the bucket harmoniously with the original lines of the Duster. The result is a vehicle with a cohesive and professional appearance.

Electrified engine options

The Duster pickup truck inherits the modern and efficient engines of the European SUV, with a strong call for electrification to reduce emissions and consumption. One of the main versions is the Mild Hybrid, which combines a 1.2 three-cylinder turbo engine with 130 hp and a 48 volt electrical system. Este set is associated with a six-speed manual transmission and the 4×4 traction system, expanding the vehicle’s capacity on different types of terrain.

The other option available is the Hybrid 140, a full hybrid configuration that does not require external recharging. Ela uses a 1.6 naturally aspirated gasoline engine that works in conjunction with two electric motors, delivering a combined power of 140 hp. Nesta version, the transmission is multi-mode automatic and the drive is exclusively front-wheel drive, with a total focus on energy efficiency for urban use, where the vehicle can run in electric mode most of the time.

The differentials of 4×4 traction

The availability of 4×4 traction in the semi-hybrid version is one of the biggest attractions of the European Duster pickup truck. Essa functionality significantly expands the vehicle’s usable radius, allowing it to safely tackle unpaved roads, rough terrain or adverse weather conditions, such as snow and ice, common in many parts of Europa. The all-wheel drive system offers five driver-selectable driving modes via a selector on the console: Auto, Snow (snow), Mud/Sand (mud/sand), Off-Road and Essa variety of adjustments allows the vehicle’s behavior to be adapted to road conditions, optimizing torque distribution between the axles, throttle response and traction control to ensure maximum performance and safety.

For a professional audience, such as farmers, civil engineers or technicians working in the field, the combination of off-road capability with the economy of the hybrid engine represents an important competitive advantage. The system allows the vehicle to navigate with agility both in the city and in rural environments, without sacrificing energy efficiency or the ability to overcome moderate obstacles. Essa versatility is an attribute that few compact commercial vehicles on the current market can provide, making the Duster pickup a unique work tool in its niche segment.

Launch scenario for Brasil

The reality of the Duster pickup in the Europa contrasts sharply with the Renault’s plans for the Brazilian market, which is more focused on volume, cargo capacity and aspirational design. No Brasil, the brand was a pioneer in the intermediate pickup truck segment with the Oroch, launched in 2015 and which paved the way for strong competitors. Atualmente, the model has established itself as a robust and versatile option, offering the 1.6 aspirated engine and the modern 1.3 TCe turbo flex.

For the future, plans are more ambitious with the arrival of the Niagara, a global project that will give rise to a larger and more sophisticated pickup truck. The Niagara promises to compete at a higher level, targeting rivals such as the Fiat Toro, and will be built on a more modern platform, reinforcing the brand’s offensive in the lucrative pickup truck segment in the América of the Sul.

Production and availability at Europa

It is essential to emphasize that the Duster pickup truck is not a series production model of the Dacia or the Renault. Trata is a special conversion carried out by Romturingia, available only on request. Este business model limits its production scale and positions it as a niche product, aimed at customers who specifically need this configuration and are willing to invest in professional customization.

Adaptation history

The Romturingia has a long and recognized tradition in modifying Dacia vehicles, especially the Duster. The company had already created pickup versions of the previous generation of the SUV, meeting an ongoing demand for a compact, 4×4 and robust commercial vehicle in the Leste Europeu region. The continuity of the project with the new Duster demonstrates the commercial viability of this adaptation and Dacia’s confidence in the preparer’s work. The experience accumulated over the years allowed the Romturingia to improve the conversion process, offering superior finishing quality and better structural integration between the cabin and the bucket in the current model.
