Dacia officially presented the new Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4, a model that is uniquely positioned in the automotive market. The vehicle stands out for being the only compact SUV to combine four-wheel drive, a 48-volt micro-hybrid system and a dual-fuel engine, capable of operating on gasoline and Gás Liquefeito of Petróleo (LPG). Esta innovative configuration allows for unprecedented versatility.
The big difference of the new Duster is its ability to operate in electric mode in various low-speed situations, optimizing fuel consumption on urban journeys. With two fuel tanks, one for gasoline and the other for LPG, fully filled, the SUV achieves a total range of up to 1,500 kilometers, setting a new standard of efficiency and range in its segment.
The main engine is a 1.2 turbo three-cylinder front engine that develops 140 horsepower. Ele is assisted by a 31 horsepower rear electric motor, responsible for activating 4×4 traction instantly when necessary. The set is managed by a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which guarantees smooth gear changes and contributes to the low consumption figures declared by the Romanian manufacturer.
Innovative propulsion system details
The powertrain of the Dacia Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4 integrates components that work in a coordinated way to maximize both energy efficiency and the ability to tackle difficult terrain. The 140 hp 1.2 turbo engine, equipped with 48 volt micro-hybrid technology, was designed to allow the use of gasoline or LPG without requiring mechanical modifications, offering flexibility to the driver. The electric motor, positioned on the rear axle, not only provides an additional 31 hp for all-wheel drive, but also acts as a generator during regenerative braking, recovering energy that would otherwise be wasted. Esta rear unit features its own two-speed transmission, which optimizes performance at low speeds and allows complete decoupling to reduce friction when 4×4 traction is not required. The 0.84 kWh lithium-ion battery automatically recharges while driving, eliminating the need for external outlets. The electronic system manages torque distribution, prioritizing electric mode on urban routes. The combined power reaches 154 horsepower, with a maximum torque of 230 Nm from the thermal engine, managed by the double clutch transmission.
Consumption and extended autonomy
The Dacia Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4 records an approved consumption that varies between 5.5 and 5.6 liters per 100 kilometers when using gasoline. Este number is already competitive for an SUV with all-wheel drive, but the economic efficiency becomes even more evident when operating on LPG.
In LPG mode, due to the lower energy density of the fuel, consumption rises to a range between 7.1 and 7.2 liters per 100 kilometers. However, the significantly lower cost of LPG in many European markets offsets the higher consumption, resulting in a very attractive cost per kilometer driven. The two tanks, each with a capacity of 50 liters, guarantee an impressive combined range of up to 1,500 kilometers in the WLTP cycle, allowing long journeys with few stops for refueling.
Hybrid system operation and driving modes
The four-wheel drive of the Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4 is activated electronically and instantly thanks to the dedicated rear electric motor. Under normal high-speed driving conditions, the vehicle operates in front-wheel drive only to minimize fuel consumption and mechanical drag.
In urban cycles, the system is capable of running in all-electric mode for up to 60% of the time, using exclusively the rear engine. Essa feature not only drastically reduces pollutant emissions in urban areas, but also improves acoustic comfort at low speeds, providing a quieter and smoother drive.
The model offers specific driving modes that adjust the behavior of the propulsion and traction system for different scenarios. The “Auto” option automatically balances efficiency and performance, while the “Eco” mode prioritizes fuel economy, optimizing throttle response and use of the hybrid system.
For more challenging terrain, “Snow” modes are available, which optimizes traction on slippery surfaces; “Mud/Sand”, which adjusts traction control for loose terrain; “Lock”, which distributes torque equally between the axles for low-grip situations; and “Descida Control”, which maintains a constant and safe speed on steep slopes without the need for driver intervention on the brakes.
Maintained off-road capabilities
Despite the complexity of the hybrid system, the Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4 preserves the off-road characteristics that have consolidated the line’s reputation. The ground clearance remains high, and the entry and exit angles were designed to facilitate use on trails and rough terrain, allowing the vehicle to safely negotiate obstacles. The rear electric motor provides instant torque, which significantly improves traction on low-grip surfaces such as mud or sand, where quick response is crucial.
The system also allows the complete decoupling of the rear axle, an important advantage to avoid energy losses due to friction on the asphalt. The automatic transmission, combined with paddle shifters for manual shifting, facilitates maneuvering in difficult terrain, offering greater control to the driver. The vehicle maintains its towing and load capacity, proving its versatility for work and leisure, in line with the specifications of the Duster range. Testes in desert terrain demonstrated the model’s ability to advance stably over sand dunes, with descent control operating accurately.
Updated interior and equipment
The cabin of the Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4 was designed with robust materials that are resistant to intense use, maintaining the brand’s philosophy of practicality. The central panel is dominated by an infotainment screen compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which concentrates the vehicle’s main functions. The digital instrument cluster displays hybrid system-specific information such as power flow and active traction mode, allowing the driver to monitor efficiency in real time and adapt their driving style to maximize economy.
Prices and positioning in the European market
Prices for the Dacia Duster Hybrid-G 150 4×4 start at 28,500 euros for the Expression version in selected European markets. Esta price range is extremely competitive, considering the embedded technology and the absence of direct competitors offering the same combination of features.
The most equipped configurations, such as the Extreme and Journey, increase the value to around 30,000 euros, still positioning the model as an excellent value for money option. The Dacia strategy is clear: to offer an affordable all-wheel drive SUV without compromising on energy efficiency or versatility.
The vehicle can now be configured at dealerships in several European countries. Production takes place in factories belonging to the Renault group adapted for the new propulsion system, and Dacia plans to expand the technology to the future Bigster SUV, reinforcing its commitment to hybrid and affordable solutions.
Unique competitive advantages in the segment
Currently, no other manufacturer offers the combination of a micro-hybrid system, LPG dual fuel and 4×4 traction with a dedicated electric motor in a compact SUV. Essa exclusivity attracts consumers concerned about operating costs and emissions restrictions, but who do not want to give up the capability of a 4×4 vehicle.
The battery’s self-charging system eliminates range anxiety, a critical point for pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Além Furthermore, the consolidated LPG infrastructure in many European countries favors the adoption of the model, which stands out for its practicality and economy in daily use and on long trips.
