App Store ads lose blue background and become more discreet in Apple tests with the new iOS

Apple began a testing phase for a significant visual change in the ads shown on App Store. Usuários who updated their devices to iOS 26.3 began to notice the absence of the traditional blue background that highlighted sponsored results, making them visually almost identical to organic search results.

The change, implemented in an A/B testing format, reaches a limited portion of users globally and has as its main effect the more subtle integration of ads into the application listing. With the removal of the colored outline, the only identification of paid content is now the small badge with the word “Ad” next to the app icon, a detail that can go unnoticed when scrolling quickly.

This visual experimentation is not an isolated event, but rather a step in line with the company’s strategy to expand its advertising revenue. The change comes months after the announcement in December 2025 that Apple plans to increase the number of sponsored positions in App Store searches throughout 2026, signaling an effort to make advertising an even more integrated part of the browsing experience.

The end of blue highlighting in results

The main modification being tested is the complete elimination of the light blue background that served as a visual container for the ads on App Store. Esse graphic element was an immediate and clear indicator for users that the result was paid advertising space, differentiating it from other applications listed by the platform’s relevance algorithm.

Now, the ad cards have the same white background as the organic results, blending into the list fluidly. The responsibility for identification falls entirely on the textual seal “Advertisement”, positioned discreetly. Essa approach seeks greater naturalness in the presentation of sponsored content, a trend already observed on other major digital platforms.

The strategy behind the subtlety

Experts in digital marketing and mobile advertising point out that removing visual prominence has a clear objective: to increase click-through rates (CTR) on ads. By reducing visual distinction, the likelihood of a user touching a sponsored result, confusing it with an organic store recommendation, tends to increase considerably.

This tactic aims to enhance the return on investment for developers using the Apple Ads platform and, consequently, boost Apple’s revenue. The change is seen as an optimization of the interface to maximize the performance of ads, making them less disruptive and more effective in generating conversions and downloads.

Scheduled ad expansion

The foundation for this shift was laid in late 2025 when Apple officially communicated its plans to expand ad inventory on App Store. The company intends to introduce new sponsored spaces, which will appear at different points on the search results page, offering more visibility opportunities for developers.

The current visual redesign can be interpreted as preparing the interface to accommodate a greater volume of advertising without creating excessive visual pollution. By making each individual ad more discreet, the platform can insert more of them without drastically compromising the clean, uncluttered aesthetic that is a hallmark of the iOS ecosystem.

For developers, this expansion represents both an opportunity and a challenge. Haverá more spaces to promote apps, but also an intensification of competition for bidding on the most valuable keywords, which can lead to an increase in the costs of marketing campaigns.

How the Apple advertising system works

Advertising within App Store is managed by the Apple Ads platform, which operates based on an auction system. Desenvolvedores compete for visibility by bidding on keywords that users type into the search field. The winning ad is displayed in a prominent position, usually at the top of the results.

The system not only considers the bid amount, but also the app’s relevance to the search term and the likelihood of the user interacting with the ad. Isso ensures that sponsored results maintain a level of quality and relevance, preserving the user experience on the platform.

The platform offers robust targeting tools, allowing advertisers to target their campaigns based on criteria such as geographic location, device model (iPhone or iPad) and user behavior. The most common charging model is cost per touch (CPT), where the developer only pays when a user actually clicks on the ad.

Additionally, a detailed dashboard provides essential performance metrics such as impression rates, touches, and conversions (downloads). Esses data allows developers to continually optimize their strategies, adjusting bids, creatives, and keywords to maximize return on advertising investment.

The evolution of app store advertising

Since its introduction in 2016, advertising on App Store has evolved gradually and strategically. Inicialmente, options were limited to a single ad at the top of the search results. Over time, Apple realized the huge revenue potential and began cautiously expanding the formats and placements available to advertisers.

An important milestone occurred in 2022, with the introduction of ads in the “Today” tab, the main page of the store, and in the “You might also like” section, located at the bottom of other app pages. In 2024, the company added another position on the applications’ details page, consolidating advertising as an integral part of the user’s discovery journey. Cada expansion was accompanied by an increase in developer adoption and significant growth in the segment’s revenue.

The financial engine of the services division

The Serviços division of Apple, which encompasses App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple TV+ and advertising, has become one of the most important pillars of the company’s growth. In the last fiscal quarter of 2025, the segment recorded a 15% increase in revenue, and digital advertising is one of the areas with the greatest potential for expansion within this portfolio. Projeções market share indicates that Apple’s advertising revenue could approach $8 billion annually in the coming years, and App Store is the main showcase for this business. The store not only generates revenue through commissions of 15% to 30% on app sales and internal purchases, but it also establishes itself as a powerful advertising platform. The current ad design change is a key piece in the puzzle to further unlock this financial potential, refining monetization without alienating users.

Ad regulations and transparency

Despite the search for more fluid visual integration, Apple needs to navigate an increasingly strict regulatory scenario, especially in União Europeia and Estados Unidos. Órgãos regulators require that the distinction between organic and sponsored content be clear and unambiguous to protect consumers. Maintaining the “Advertisement” seal, even if discreet, is the company’s main safeguard to comply with these transparency guidelines and avoid possible sanctions.
