BYD brought to Tokyo Auto Salon prototypes and production units that represent its current and future lineup. The kei EV Racco appeared as the main attraction, being the brand’s first light electric vehicle developed specifically for Japanese standards.

The Sealion 6, a plug-in hybrid SUV launched on December 1, 2025, also gained central space on the stand. The model arrives with front-wheel drive and a starting price below 4 million yen, positioning itself as a competitive option in the medium segment.

Other vehicles on display included the Dolphin Long Range with partial specification updates and the Atto 3 Limited. The brand completed the lineup with the Sealion 7 crossover and the high-end Seal sedan.

The Racco arrives in two lithium-ion battery variants. The standard version offers a total capacity of around 20 kWh, guaranteeing a range of more than 200 km on a complete cycle.

The long-range configuration increases capacity to 30 kWh, allowing more than 300 km on a single charge. Ambas options utilize proprietary BYD technologies for energy efficiency in compact dimensions.

The model adopts a super height wagon body, common in the Japanese kei segment. The company plans to open a special website for Racco in February 2026, ahead of a summer launch.

DM-i hybrid technology in future PHEVs

BYD announced two plug-in hybrid models for 2026 based on the DM-i platform, which prioritizes electric traction with combustion engine support. The Atto 2, a compact SUV, combines a 1.5-liter engine with a high-efficiency electric unit.

The Seal 6, a medium station wagon, follows the same architecture, integrating a lithium-ion battery for predominantly electric operation. Ambos vehicles arrive on the Japanese market in the second half or by the end of the year.

DM-i technology reduces consumption and emissions by using the thermal engine mainly as a generator. The strategy reinforces the brand’s commitment to low-emission mobility in mature markets.

Sealion 6 as a hybrid gateway

The Sealion 6 marked BYD’s debut in plug-in hybrids in the Japão, launching in December 2025. The midsize SUV offers a front-wheel drive version for less than 4 million yen, an affordable price for the segment.

The model incorporates a super hybrid system with a focus on comfort and economy. Deliveries of the FWD variant begin at the end of January 2026, followed by the all-wheel drive option.

The initial reception indicates growing interest in Chinese alternatives in the Japanese market. BYD uses Auto Salon to bring the public closer to its technological solutions.

BYD’s expansion strategy in the Japão

Participation in Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 reflects BYD’s aggressive plan to consolidate presence in Japão. The company sees the country as a key market for new energy vehicles, despite strong local competition.

The kei EV Racco represents a strategic entry into the light vehicle segment, which accounts for a significant portion of national sales. The offer of competitive autonomy aims to attract urban consumers concerned about operational costs.

The inclusion of PHEVs such as Atto 2 and Seal 6 expands the portfolio for different profiles. BYD combines competitive pricing with proprietary battery and hybrid technologies.

The brand has already established a network of dealerships and services in the archipelago. The year 2026 consolidates the transition to a broader lineup of electric and plug-in hybrids.

Current lineup and recent updates

BYD maintains consolidated models in the Japão such as the compact Dolphin, now in the Long Range version with specification adjustments. The Atto 3 appears in the Limited edition, aimed at consumers looking for a midsize electric SUV.

The Seal sedan represents the brand’s premium offering, with high finishing and electric performance. The Sealion 7 completes the portfolio of crossovers with a distinctive design.

These vehicles form the current base while the company prepares the announced news. The exhibition at Auto Salon allowed the Japanese public direct contact with the evolution of the line.

BYD continues to invest in local adaptations to meet market regulations and preferences. The focus on compact and efficient vehicles aligns with Japanese urban demands.
