Toyota Kirloskar Motor has officially announced the arrival of the Urban Cruiser Ebella EV, its first all-electric SUV designed for the mass market at Índia. The model, which is a restyled version of the Maruti Suzuki eVitara, is now open for reservations across the country, with the commercial launch scheduled for the next few weeks. The initiative marks a significant step by the Japanese automaker towards electrification in one of the fastest growing automotive markets in the world.
One of the vehicle’s biggest highlights is the introduction of a “Battery as a Service” (BaaS) scheme, which allows consumers to rent the battery separately. Essa strategy aims to considerably reduce the initial cost of purchasing the SUV, making electric mobility more accessible to a wider audience and following a trend already explored by direct competitors in the Asian market.
With this launch, Toyota reinforces its sustainable mobility strategy, investing in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Essa technology is widely recognized for its durability, improved safety and lower production cost compared to other battery chemistries, aligning with the value proposition of the Urban Cruiser Ebella EV.
Modern and aerodynamic exterior design
The Urban Cruiser Ebella EV distinguishes itself from its platform brother, the Maruti eVitara, by adopting more fluid and elegant lines. The front features a closed grille, characteristic of electric vehicles, complemented by single-seat LED headlights with pixelated elements in the daytime running lights (DRL), which give an aggressive and technological visual identity. The bumpers were designed to be smooth and without many recesses, contributing to a clean appearance and improving the aerodynamic efficiency of the package.
Looking from the side, the SUV displays a curvaceous silhouette, accentuated by chunky black moldings on the wheel arches and the bottom of the doors. The 18-inch alloy wheels feature a two-tone aerodynamic design designed to minimize air resistance. The model is slightly larger in length and height than the Suzuki, and the absence of roof bars reinforces its more rounded and urban profile. At the rear, a horizontal LED bar connects the headlights, which also feature pixelated elements, creating a modern and unified light signature.
Premium and functional interior
The cabin of the Urban Cruiser Ebella EV is designed with a two-tone layout, combining black and beige, and uses soft-touch materials on the dashboard to create a sophisticated atmosphere. The two-spoke steering wheel, with a square shape and covered in synthetic leather, reinforces the premium feeling on board.
The air conditioning outlets, also square, have a brushed aluminum finish, adding a touch of refinement to the internal design. The dashboard is dominated by a dual-screen configuration, comprising a 10.25-inch digital cluster for the driver and a 10.1-inch infotainment center.
The Toyota chose to maintain physical buttons for essential functions, a decision that prioritizes ergonomics and ease of use while driving. Rear seat space is adequate for adults, although the raised floor, due to the battery, may reduce thigh support on longer journeys. A moderately sized fixed panoramic roof helps enhance the feeling of space and light in the cabin.
Comfort and connectivity features
The Urban Cruiser Ebella EV arrives well equipped to ensure an enhanced experience for all occupants. The list of standard and optional items was designed to meet the demands of the modern consumer, who seeks technology and convenience in their daily lives.
Among the main comfort features, the ventilated front seats, ideal for hot climates, and the 10-way electric adjustment for the driver’s seat stand out, providing an ideal driving position. The vehicle also has a wireless charging system for smartphones, eliminating the need for cables.
For music lovers, a premium sound system is available as an option. Ambient lighting and a fixed panoramic roof complement the interior atmosphere, making journeys more enjoyable. The 10.1-inch multimedia center offers an intuitive interface, with integration for navigation and access to vital vehicle information.
Connectivity is another strong point, allowing remote control of various car functions through a dedicated app. The 10.25-inch digital cluster, in turn, displays driving data in a clear and customizable way, forming a visually unified and technological panel with the central screen.
Battery and performance options
The Toyota offers the Urban Cruiser Ebella EV with two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery options, allowing the customer to choose the configuration that best suits their usage needs. The entry-level version comes with a 49 kWh package, which powers an electric motor with 144 hp and 189 Nm of torque. Já the higher capacity version has a 61 kWh battery, increasing power to 174 hp, maintaining the same torque. With this larger battery, the declared autonomy can reach 543 km in the ARAI test cycle, a competitive number for the segment. Ambas versions have front-wheel drive and are equipped with a single engine. The charging system is versatile, supporting up to 150 kW in direct current (DC) for quick charges and up to 11 kW in alternating current (AC), which guarantees flexibility for recharging at home or in public stations. Performance is focused on smoothness and efficiency, with features like the heat pump that helps save battery power in colder climates.
Comprehensive security
Safety received special attention in the development of the Urban Cruiser Ebella EV. The model comes standard with seven airbags, four-wheel disc brakes and an electronic parking brake. Além In addition, the SUV has an ADAS package (Systems Avançados from Assistência to
Innovative ownership scheme
Toyota’s main innovation with the Urban Cruiser Ebella EV is the “Battery as a Service” (BaaS) business model. Através of it, customers can purchase the vehicle and pay a monthly subscription for the battery, which significantly reduces the initial purchase price of the SUV. The automaker also offers an eight-year warranty for the battery and a buyback program that guarantees up to 60% of the component’s value, offering greater financial security to the owner.
To support new owners, Toyota has already prepared more than 500 service points throughout Índia to service electric vehicles. The company is also expanding partnerships to strengthen charging infrastructure in the country. Essa innovative approach aims to facilitate consumers’ transition to electric mobility, making it more flexible and financially viable.
Positioning in the competitive market
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Ebella EV enters one of the hottest segments in the Indian market: compact electric SUVs. Ele will face direct competition not only from its platform brother, the Maruti eVitara, but also from already established models and future launches, such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, the Tata Curvv EV and the MG ZS EV.
Other rivals, such as the Mahindra BE 6 and new VinFast models, will also compete for consumer preference. Toyota relies on the strength of its brand, its vast technical assistance network and innovative proprietary options, such as BaaS, to differentiate its product and capture an important share of this rapidly expanding market.
