Valve has officially announced its new Steam Machine, a compact gaming PC designed for the living room, marking the company’s return to this hardware segment. The device, unveiled at an event in

Equipped with an AMD Zen 4 six-core processor and an RDNA 3 graphics unit, the device promises to deliver enough performance to run games in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. The Valve strategy seeks to combine the flexibility of the PC with the convenience of consoles, building on the success and learnings obtained with the Steam Deck portable.

The operating system will be SteamOS 3, based on Linux, which uses the Proton compatibility layer to run most titles developed for Windows. The company guarantees that more than 90% of games available on the platform will be compatible at launch, although some titles with specific anti-cheat systems still represent a technical challenge.

Semi-custom hardware for high performance

The heart of the new Steam Machine is a semi-custom APU from AMD that combines an Zen 4 processor with six cores capable of reaching up to 4.8 GHz and a GPU based on the RDNA 3 architecture with 28 compute units. Essa configuration is designed to operate with a thermal efficiency of 30 W, which allows for quiet operation even in small cabinet dimensions. The graphics architecture stands out for its native support for second-generation ray tracing, processing lighting effects, shadows and reflections with a lower impact on frame rate compared to previous architectures. Preliminary Testes indicate that the energy efficiency of the RDNA 3 GPU is approximately 20% higher than that of the RDNA 2, present in current generation consoles, which translates into less heat and greater sustained performance during long gaming sessions.

Memory and storage specifications

The system has 16 GB of DDR5 RAM, a configuration that optimizes gaming and multitasking performance. Desse total, 8 GB are dedicatedly allocated to the GPU, functioning as GDDR6 VRAM, which is essential for managing high-resolution textures, such as those required by 4K.

In terms of storage, the Steam Machine will be offered in multiple versions, starting with a 512GB NVMe SSD. Para players with large libraries, there will be an option up to 2TB. The Valve facilitated storage expansion through accessible M.2 slots, allowing users to perform upgrades without the need for specialized tools.

In addition to internal storage, the device will also support microSD cards. Essa functionality provides a quick and convenient way to expand the space available for games, especially for smaller titles or for transporting data between different devices.

Direct competition with desktop consoles

The performance target of the new Steam Machine places it as a direct competitor to the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series

Compared to the Xbox Series X, the Valve device may lag slightly behind in terms of raw power measured in teraflops. However, the combination of the latest Zen 4 processor and RDNA 3 GPU can offer advantages in scenarios that depend on high CPU performance and efficiency in new graphics technologies.

The memory of the PS5 and Xbox Series X uses a unified architecture, where the 16 GB of GDDR6 is shared between the system and graphics. The Steam Machine takes a hybrid approach, ensuring a dedicated portion for VRAM, which can optimize texture loading.

In terms of storage, the speed of the new device’s SSD is estimated at 7 GB/s, surpassing the 5.5 GB/s of the PlayStation 5. Isso may result in even shorter loading times in games optimized for the platform.

Upscaling technology to ensure fluidity

To achieve the target of 4K at 60 fps, the Steam Machine will make heavy use of AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology. Version 3 of FSR uses advanced algorithms to reconstruct high-resolution images from a smaller base and also employs frame generation to increase fluidity, transforming games that would run at 30 fps into 60 fps experiences.

This software tool is crucial to offsetting the GPU’s 28 compute unit count, allowing the device to rival the performance of more powerful consoles in demanding titles like Cyberpunk 2077, according to preliminary benchmarks released.

Price projection and available packages

Market sources speculate that the entry-level model of the Steam Machine, with 512 GB of storage, will be launched for US$499. The Esse value positions it competitively against the PS5

The version with 2 TB of SSD could hit the market for US$649, a price comparable to that of the Xbox Series X.

The advantages of the Steam ecosystem

One of the biggest attractions of Steam Machine is direct access to Steam’s gigantic library of games. Players will be able to use their already purchased titles without the need for additional subscriptions, such as Game Pass or PS Plus, to play online or access their catalog.

Additionally, native community mod support through Steam Workshop expands the longevity of countless games, such as The Witcher 3 and Skyrim, by offering new, free content created by players themselves. The SteamOS 3 operating system, with Big Picture mode, optimizes control navigation on large screens.

Compatibility and long-term support

Valve has committed to offering software support and updates for the device for at least five years, a lifecycle in line with traditional consoles. The company is also actively working with developers to expand compatibility for multiplayer games that utilize anti-cheat systems, one of the few remaining friction points for the Linux-based platform.
