The development of the long-awaited Polestar 7, a new compact electric SUV, gained a new chapter with the sighting of a heavily camouflaged prototype during road tests at China. The images, which quickly circulated on specialized portals, reveal a vehicle with the Swedish brand’s characteristic visual identity, indicating that the project is progressing at an accelerated pace to compete in one of the hottest segments of the global market.
Although production is planned for the European continent, the use of the Geely group’s facilities at China for the initial validation phases is a common practice, taking advantage of the parent company’s vast infrastructure. Este sighting confirms Polestar’s plans to expand its portfolio with a more affordable model, positioned below the current Polestar 3 and 4, seeking to attract a wider audience and increase its sales volume.
The new electric SUV appears as a more practical and familiar alternative to the Polestar 2 sedan, promising to combine Scandinavian minimalist design with the versatility necessary for daily use. The expectation is that the model will be officially presented in 2027, with the first deliveries scheduled for the following year, reinforcing the brand’s offensive in the electrification scenario.
Design details emerge despite camouflage
Although the heavy camouflage hides most of the body lines, crucial elements of the front end are already visible and confirm the Polestar’s design language. The divided headlights, with the light signature in the shape of an “Thor hammer”, are unmistakable and are integrated into a closed front grille, typical of electric vehicles. The lateral silhouette suggests robust proportions of a compact SUV, but with a smooth roofline that flirts with coupe style, balancing sportiness and functionality. The rear remains a mystery, but the adoption of thin vertical LED lights is expected, following the visual pattern of the manufacturer’s most recent launches.
Internally, Polestar relies on an approach that contrasts with the market trend of completely eliminating physical controls. The company has already signaled that the Polestar 7 will maintain tactile buttons for essential functions, such as climate control and driving modes, meeting drivers’ demand for a more intuitive and safe interface. Essa user-centered design philosophy will be combined with a large central screen for the infotainment system, which is expected to run an updated version of the operating system based on the Google. The commitment to sustainability will also be a pillar, with the extensive use of recycled and vegan materials in the covering of seats, panels and other surfaces in the cabin.
European platform and production strategy
The technical basis of Polestar 7 will be the modern and flexible SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) architecture, developed by the Geely group. The Essa modular platform is already successfully used in other electric vehicles from the conglomerate, such as the Volvo EX30 and the Zeekr X, which allows a significant reduction in development and production costs through economies of scale. The SEA architecture is designed to support different engine and battery configurations, including 800-volt systems that enable ultra-fast recharges. Essa versatility will allow the Polestar to offer the SUV in rear-wheel drive versions, equipped with a single engine to maximize range and maintain a competitive price, and also in dual-motor all-wheel drive configurations, focused on high performance and vigorous acceleration. The strategic decision to produce the Polestar 7 at the future Volvo factory in Košice, at Eslováquia, from 2027, is a key move to strengthen the brand’s presence at Europa. Local production not only optimizes logistics on the continent, but also protects the vehicle from potential import tariffs on cars manufactured in China, ensuring a more aggressive price positioning in the European market. The Slovak unit, which will receive billion-dollar investments, will be fundamental for the group’s expansion.
Expected engine and performance
The engine configurations of the Polestar 7 will seek to meet different consumer profiles. The entry-level version must have a single electric motor on the rear axle, prioritizing energy efficiency and a range that can exceed 500 kilometers on a full charge, depending on the battery pack chosen.
For customers seeking a more dynamic driving experience, the Polestar will offer an Performance variant with two electric motors, one on each axle, configuring an all-wheel drive system. Nesta version, combined power can approach 400 horsepower, guaranteeing expressive acceleration and sporty behavior.
Battery options should vary between 60 kWh and 80 kWh, allowing for different price ranges and autonomy. Graças to the 800 volt architecture, recharging time will be one of the highlights, with the possibility of recovering from 10% to 80% of capacity in less than 30 minutes on compatible fast chargers.
Positioning in the competitive electric market
The Polestar 7 will arrive to compete in one of the most competitive and fastest growing segments in the world: premium compact electric SUVs. The model will face established rivals, such as the Tesla Model Y, a sales leader in several markets, as well as European competitors such as the Audi Q4 e-tron, the BMW iX3 and the Mercedes-Benz EQA.
Polestar’s main strategy to stand out will be to offer a product with a differentiated design, high technology on board and a competitive price positioning. Initial estimates point to a starting value below 50 thousand euros at Europa, which would make it an extremely attractive option for families looking to transition to an electric vehicle without giving up quality and status.
In addition to external competition, the model will also have to position itself against “cousins” from the same Geely group, such as the future Volvo EX60 and updated versions of the Zeekr
The exponential growth in sales of electric vehicles, with projections indicating an increase of more than 25% in 2026, reinforces the importance of this launch. SUVs already represent more than half of the volume of electric vehicles sold in developed markets, making the Polestar 7 a fundamental piece for the brand’s future.
Rigorous testing and validation process
The tests carried out on the China are just the first stage of an extensive global development program. The prototypes will run thousands of kilometers in extreme conditions, from the intense cold of the Círculo Polar Ártico to the scorching heat of deserts, to ensure the reliability and durability of all components, especially the battery and propulsion system.
Engineers at Polestar are focused on calibrating the suspension and steering to deliver the brand’s signature balance between comfort for urban use and precise, engaging driving dynamics on winding roads. Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) also undergo fine-tuning to suit the regulations and traffic conditions of specific markets, such as Europa and América from Norte.
Focus on user experience and sustainability
The experience on board the Polestar 7 will be continually improved through over-the-air (OTA) software updates. Essa technology allows the company to send performance improvements, new features and security fixes directly to the vehicle, without the owner having to visit a dealership, keeping the car always up to date.
Schedule for official launch
The Polestar should follow its launch schedule with the presentation of a conceptual model very close to the production version at the end of 2026. The Este event will serve to officially reveal the design and main technical details of the SUV, creating expectations in the market.
Advance reservations are expected to open in mid-2027, allowing interested customers to secure the first units. Initial deliveries at Europa are expected to begin in the first half of 2028, with expansion to other global markets, such as América and Norte, to follow.
